The Deming Cycle, also known as the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, is a model that was developed by W. Edwards Deming in the 1940s to improve the quality and efficiency of business processes. The Deming cycle is a four-step process that is designed to continuously improve processes through a series of iterations. The four steps are: plan, do, check, and act.

I have chosen the Deming Cycle as a model to apply to my advanced practice role as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) because it is a practical and efficient way to improve quality and efficiency in healthcare processes. The model’s iterative process is a great way to identify and solve problems in healthcare systems and it is flexible enough to be applied to different aspects of care.

Model Characteristics

Deming Cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act)

Characteristic 1:
Plan- Identify the problem and gather data to understand it
(Deming, W. Edwards, 1982) The NP identified that there was a high rate of patient no-shows for follow-up appointments. She gathered data on the number of missed appointments, the patients’ demographics, and the reasons for missed appointments.

Application to NP role:
The NP used the data to develop a plan to address the problem of missed appointments. She implemented reminders for the patients, offered different appointment times, and provided transportation Helpance.

Characteristic 2:
Do- Implement the plan
(Deming, W. Edwards, 1982) The NP implemented the plan to address missed appointments, such as sending text message reminders, offering different appointment times, and providing transportation Helpance.

In conclusion, the Deming Cycle is a useful model that can be applied to improve healthcare processes. As a Nurse Practitioner, I found that it was a valuable tool for identifying and solving problems related to missed appointments. By following the four steps of the Deming Cycle, I was able to implement a plan, evaluate the results, and make necessary changes to improve patient outcomes.
