Diversity in advanced health practice refers to the recognition and understanding of differences among patients, families, and communities in terms of race, ethnicity, culture, language, religion, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and other factors that can affect health and healthcare (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2016). Recognizing and addressing diversity is essential for providing high-quality, patient-centered care that is respectful of patients’ unique needs and preferences.

In the United States, there is a growing need for healthcare providers who are culturally competent and able to provide care that is sensitive to the diverse needs of patients. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the minority population in the U.S. is projected to become the majority by 2044 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2017). This means that healthcare providers must be able to provide care that is responsive to the diverse needs of a rapidly changing patient population.

Cultural competency is defined as the ability of healthcare providers to understand and respect the cultural and linguistic backgrounds of their patients, and to provide care that is tailored to meet their unique needs (American Nurses Association, 2015). This includes being able to communicate effectively with patients in their preferred language, understanding and respecting their cultural beliefs and practices, and recognizing the impact of social determinants of health on their health outcomes.

Diversity in advanced health practice also includes understanding and addressing the impact of social determinants of health on patients’ health outcomes. Social determinants of health are defined as the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age, and which have a significant impact on their health outcomes (World Health Organization, 2020). These factors include poverty, education, housing, and access to healthcare.

Providing care that is responsive to the diverse needs of patients requires healthcare providers to be culturally aware and sensitive to the cultural, linguistic, and social factors that can affect patients’ health outcomes. This includes understanding the impact of social determinants of health, such as poverty, education, housing, and access to healthcare, on patients’ health outcomes. It also includes being able to communicate effectively with patients in their preferred language, understanding and respecting their cultural beliefs and practices, and recognizing the impact of social determinants of health on their health outcomes.

Diversity in advanced health practice is essential for providing high-quality, patient-centered care that is respectful of patients’ unique needs and preferences.
