Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of deaths

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of deaths in the United States, equating to about 1 in every 4 deaths. In 2018, the CDC published updated best practice strategies to help decrease cardiovascular disease risks.

One of the best practice strategies for cardiovascular disease prevention programs is “Increased Physical Activity.” According to the CDC, “Increased physical activity can help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers” (CDC, 2018).

In terms of effectiveness, multiple studies have shown that physical activity can significantly reduce the risk of CVD (Blair et al., 1989; Hu et al., 1999; Lee et al., 2012). For example, a meta-analysis of over 300,000 participants found that physical activity was associated with a 27% reduction in the risk of CVD (Lee et al., 2012).

The impact of increased physical activity on CVD prevention is significant. In addition to reducing the risk of CVD, physical activity can also improve overall health and quality of life (CDC, 2018). It can help lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and reduce the risk of other chronic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.

There are several considerations to keep in mind when implementing a physical activity program in the community. It is important to consider the resources and facilities available for physical activity, as well as the needs and preferences of the community. It may also be helpful to involve community leaders and organizations in the planning and implementation process to ensure buy-in and sustainability.
