I recommend a maximum of two direct quotes for essays of this length. Only course materials may be cited. You must use quotation marks around any statements copied from the text (along with the page number, cited) in order to avoid committing plagiarism. Failure to properly cite information will result in a substantial
loss of points.
Answer ONE of the following essay questions:
1. Compare and contrast the lives of Native America, African (American), and white colonial women.
2. Compare and contrast the threat posed by Anne Hutchinson and the witches of Salem to Massachusetts Bay Colony. Anne Hutchinson and the witches of Salem both posed a threat to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but in very different ways.
Anne Hutchinson was a Puritan woman who challenged the religious and political authorities of the colony with her unorthodox beliefs and teachings. She held meetings in her home where she discussed religious matters and questioned the authority of the colony’s ministers, which was seen as a threat to the religious and social order of the colony. She was eventually tried and banished from the colony for heresy.
The witches of Salem, on the other hand, were accused of practicing witchcraft and causing harm to members of the community. This was seen as a threat to the spiritual well-being of the colony, and those accused of witchcraft were put on trial and many were executed. The Salem witch trials were a particularly tumultuous and controversial period in the history of the colony, and the fear and mistrust generated by the accusations had a lasting impact on the community.
While Anne Hutchinson posed a threat to the religious and political authorities of the colony with her unorthodox beliefs, the witches of Salem were seen as a threat to the spiritual well-being of the community. Both were perceived as challenges to the established order of the colony and were dealt with accordingly.
Please note: Compare and contrast requires an analysis of both similarities and differences.
