Advocacy priorities for vulnerable population

What are legislators currently doing to address your selected advocacy priorities for a vulnerable population? Are there current policies in place? Are there current policies proposed at either the state or federal level? What are the most obvious strengths and weaknesses of these policies as they relate to your advocacy priority? What might need to change?

For this Discussion, you will identify a state or federal policy that aligns with your advocacy priority. After identifying the policy, you will consider how the policy aligns and supports your identified vulnerable population. How and why does this policy align with your advocacy priorities?

Identify a proposed state and federal policy that aligns with your advocacy priorities for your vulnerable population. Clearly describe and provide evidence to support this policy. If the policy needs to change, describe and provide evidence to support the proposed change.
Advocacy for vulnerable populations is an important role for nurses and other healthcare professionals. Vulnerable populations are groups of people who are at greater risk of experiencing health disparities due to social, economic, or environmental factors. These populations may include people who are low-income, uninsured, or experiencing homelessness, as well as racial and ethnic minorities, immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities.

Some advocacy priorities for vulnerable populations may include:

Ensuring access to affordable, high-quality healthcare services: This may involve advocating for policies and programs that increase access to healthcare for underserved populations, such as Medicaid expansion or community health centers.

Promoting health equity: This may involve advocating for policies and practices that address the root causes of health disparities and ensure that all individuals have the opportunity to attain their highest level of health.

Advocating for social and economic policies that support the health and well-being of vulnerable populations: This may include advocating for policies that address poverty, unemployment, and housing insecurity, as well as policies that promote education and job training opportunities.

Promoting cultural competency and inclusivity in healthcare: This may involve advocating for policies and practices that are sensitive to the cultural and linguistic needs of diverse populations and that promote the inclusion and participation of all individuals in the healthcare system.

Protecting the rights of vulnerable populations: This may involve advocating for policies and practices that respect the autonomy and dignity of vulnerable populations and that protect their rights to privacy, informed consent, and confidentiality.
