Nursing education’s academic practices are inextricably tied to professional practices. Academic integrity and scholarly ethics translate into the ability to practice professionally and in accordance with the professional code of conduct. Nursing profession necessitates more than simply abilities, and violations of ethical standards when conducting scholarly work could readily signal a deterioration of the ethical values required in nursing practice.

Section One

Academic integrity and writing are inextricably linked concepts. Academic writing necessitates the creation of original material while building on the work of others (Morris, 2018). When writing, one must demonstrate extensive research by clearly mentioning work done by others and attributing that work to the original owners; develop the subject matter in a way that can be considered original; include expert opinions in the content and process of writing and expand these expert opinions by building, supporting, or countering them; be articulate in communication; and ensure that all paraphrasing is done effectively (Purdue University, n.d). With an emphasis on ethical conduct in research and writing, this can be quite difficult to achieve. Following ethical research practices refers to the ability to retain academic integrity. Academic integrity is defined as the ability to properly satisfy the standards of writing while also providing strong credit for the use of other people’s content.

Scholarly ethics are especially significant since they are reflected in professional behaviors. Nursing practice is founded on a set of ethical codes of conduct and professional ethics that determine nurses’ performance requirements. Various professional practice standards are based on academic findings, and research has demonstrated that scholarly ethics have an impact on nursing practice. For example, Bahrieni, Azodi, Hajivandi, and Jahanpour (2017) argue that moral sensitivity, which is shared during scholarly encounters, is essential in professional practice. At the same time, Bahraini et al. emphasize that, in addition to technical skills and knowledge, professional activity necessitates an awareness of ethics and the possession of a certain set of values, attitudes, and beliefs relevant to decision-making in the nursing setting. These values are demonstrated by the practice of scholarly ethics, which demonstrates the ability to make moral judgements (Glasper, 2016). In the absence of academic ethics, there is not only a lack of commitment to professional ethics, but also a significant likelihood of value degradation and a lack of necessary knowledge and abilities for effective professional practice. According to Wong, Lim, and Quinlan (2016), breaking academic ethics suggests that one’s conscience has been compromised. In professional practice, a compromised conscience lowers the expectation of ethical decision-making.

Section two

Maintaining academic integrity is a deliberate decision that must be made in order to employ the full range of solutions available. Personally, I would follow the many tactics described by Wong et al. (2016), such as avoiding plagiarism, academic cheating in exams and assignments, and unlawful alteration of scholarly data. Other practices I intend to adopt to improve my integrity include being open when expressing personal opinions on various issues during collaborative group work and fulfilling all personal obligations related to group work, such as collaborating in equal measure with others and accurately reporting those individual contributions in the final report submitted for marking (Guerrero-Dib, Portales & Heredia-Escoza, 2020). Students may be assigned take-home homework in which they must maintain academic integrity. In such instances, I shall maintain my integrity by working independently and without seeking third-party Helpance or participation in the achievement of professional goals and objectives. I feel that the measures outlined above will allow me to maintain the acceptable level of academic honesty.

Maintaining both professional ethics and integrity is critical in the professional context. Professionalism is defined as the ability to make ethical decisions based on one’s personal value systems. Because personal beliefs and moral tendencies are formed in part through education, I believe that sustaining academic integrity is the first step toward ensuring professionalism and ethical behavior. Commitment to academic honesty, as mentioned by Guerrero-Dib et al. (2020), is an indication of the presence of strong work ethics, and I plan to use my time as a student to instill good work ethics. Furthermore, I would use the professional code of conduct for nursing practice and the Nurse Practice Act (NPA) as points of reference when making decisions about my professional practice as a nurse. The two publications contain guidelines on pertinent professional and ethical work practices that, if followed, ensure that every registered nurse practices within the scope of his or her mandate and is accountable for any consequences that emerge from his or her practice (MacKenzie, 2017). By following the instructions in the two documents, I will be able to practice within my mandate while still providing safe, high-quality, and cost-effective healthcare services.

Conclusion

Academic and professional integrity are both crucial in the process of professional development in nursing. Academic integrity is defined by the capacity to adhere to several requirements for academic writing, such as giving credit to the original authors of content used and developing novel ideas based on research. The ability to adhere to the norms for academic integrity means that one is morally sound and thus capable of making ethical decisions in professional practice, which is vital in building ethical professional practices. Avoiding plagiarism and illegal alteration of scholarly data are two ways that could be utilized to achieve academic integrity. To guide professional activity, I plan to integrate these with the nursing code of ethics and the NPA.
