Research On Property Crime

For the introduction to research methods terms assignment, please use the article or scientific fact you have posted in the week one discussion forum to propose a research scenario on the given topic. With this topic please summarize the following:

Identify one question that is unanswered from this article

What are the most common crimes in the United States?

For example, if I am posting a link on an article on the most common crime in America (Links to an external site.) and learn that it is property crime, I might ask: What can be done to effectively reduce property crime?

Next- identify the following for your unanswered question, as if you were a researcher seeking to answer that question:
Your hypothesis-how would you go about answering your question?
Your independent variable
Your dependent variable
How you would operationalize (measure) your variables?
Whether you are asking a basic or applied research question
Whether you would collect quantitative or qualitative data and why
What evidence you would look for to see if your hypothesis is correct
A brief conclusion-explaining how answering your question would benefit criminal justice policy or procedures.

Research Questions: Why do Victims Not Report Experienced Property Crimes?

Research On Property Crime
The research question to be incorporated in their research is primarily, “Why do Victims Not Report Experienced Property Crimes?”. The study will be focussed on evaluating the frequency of victims in reporting property crimes and why victims choose not to report despite its significance in reducing its occurrence. To this effect, the research hypothesis adopted in this research is that The Deteriorating Relationship of Law Enforcement with the Public has caused the low reporting rates from victims that have undergone property crime.
The independent variable of the research will be the public’s perception and attitudes towards law enforcement. In contrast, the dependent variable is mainly the rates of victim reports on property crime made to the relevant authorities. In measuring these variables, the researcher utilizes the ordinal level of measurement that uses symbols in the classification of observations into categories that are not mutually exclusive and exhaustive (Masser, 2017). In this case, the observations will be classified using the Likert scale or very likely, likely, neutral, likely, and very unlikely. For instance, one of the data questions will be whether, as victims of property crime, they believe the law enforcement officers will effectively handle the offense. The respondent is to assign their belief against one of the categories listed on the Linkert scale.
This research is considered to be applied research since it intends to answer a practical question that will solve practical challenges within the criminal justice system. To this effect, the scientific methodology is to be incorporated, considering it entails using a step-by-step approach to determine the existing relationship in the two variables. In testing the research’s hypothesis, an experimental study will be adopted to look for the cause and effect relationship between the variables. The research will encompass a systematic manipulation of the independent variable and then measuring its impact on the defined dependent variable.
This research will mainly collect quantitative information gained from experimental research already undertaken. The findings are very significant in understanding the cause and effect relationship between the variables (Web Solutions, LLC, 2020). Notably, qualitative information that has been captured through case studies, observation of participants, and life histories will; be considered in informing this research.
In looking to certify whether the hypothesis is correct, the researcher will look for evidence like a comparison of the reported property crimes to the actual number of the crimes that have occurred, including those that have made the reports, the kind of treatment the public receives from their respective law enforcement agencies in terms of respect and fairness, the confidence of the people on law enforcement considering the criminal cases that the police have successfully handled, the presence of any initiatives focussed on fostering better relationships between the police and the public, and the general perception of the people towards law enforcement.
Conclusively, the criminal justice system does require the public’s willingness, especially the victims of crime, in mobilizing legal authorities in resolving the threats to public safety. Failing to have active community involvement, law enforcement agencies find it challenging to detect property crimes, arrest the suspects, and adequately allocate crime control resources within the communities. In this case, this research will intend to find strategies that law enforcement is to implement to improve their relationship with the public if they reduce the rates of property crime.
