In Kingdon Chapter 10, the author discusses three policy case studies to highlight the importance of the policy streams which we discussed at the beginning of class. Talk about the so-called “Reagan Revolution.” What is it? What is its relationship to all three streams of policy and how did they come together and flow through a policy window to make that “Revolution” happen? Use two paragraphs.
The Reagan Revolution, also known as the Reagan Era or the Reagan Years, refers to the conservative political movement and policies implemented by President Ronald Reagan during his time in office, from 1981 to 1989. Reagan, a Republican, came into office with the goal of reducing the size and scope of the federal government, lowering taxes, and increasing military spending. He also sought to confront the Soviet Union and communism more aggressively than his predecessors.

One of the key elements of the Reagan Revolution was the implementation of supply-side economics, also known as “Reaganomics,” which emphasized cutting taxes and reducing regulation to stimulate economic growth. Reagan implemented significant tax cuts, including the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981 and the Tax Reform Act of 1986, which lowered the top marginal tax rate from 70% to 28%. He also pursued deregulation in various sectors, including energy and financial services.

The Reagan Revolution also involved a significant increase in military spending, with the goal of strengthening the United States’ military capabilities and confronting the Soviet Union more aggressively. Reagan implemented a massive expansion of the military budget, including the development of new weapons systems, and pursued a more assertive foreign policy, including supporting anti-communist rebels in Central America and engaging in negotiations with the Soviet Union to reduce nuclear weapons.
