In a three-page paper discuss the following describe the different perspective of liability and that officers may have from correctional leaders. Discuss why leadership styles may need to be adjusted in different prison environments. Finally discuss how you as a correctional leader, would handle officers ethical issues as is not reporting inmate altercation as required.
Leadership
Some of the liabilities exhibited by prison officers are supposed to include the following: they are meant to show care and responsibility for every prisoner’s custody, which will Help in controlling inmates. Strict supervision is an attribute that can be emulated by officers in the correctional facilities. Correctional officers usually have the capability of guarding the prison strictly to prevent inmates from escaping. It allows the officers to learn how correctional officers protect themselves from assault, disturbances from various people, and dangerous inmates. Another liability emulated from correctional officers is the ability to assure that inmates don’t harm themselves.
The duty of screening all evidence is given to the correctional leader to ensure that the high-risk offenders are secluded. The officers need to know how to counsel inmates to reduce injuries and other life-threatening events (Officer, 2020). The correctional officers who are willing to stipulate the laws and policies that govern the prisoners’ lives take care of the health and safety facilities. The attribute ensures that the police remain assertive and conscious, which steers them to move forward. The correctional officers are fully equipped with tools like baggage x-ray machines and metal dictators that facilitate easy operations outside and within the prison. The aspect helps prevent smuggling of harmful substances into the prison, such as knives, which may damage.
Changes
Correctional institutions have a history of relying on authoritative and punitive leadership styles. There is a need to adjust leadership styles in different prison environments (Muñoz, 2019). They have to adopt a transformational leadership approach to govern correctional inmates, officers, and staff members within the correctional facilities. The leadership styles have to be shifted to focus on mentoring, transformational, and coaching practices. These practices help empower correctional staff in accepting the organization’s mission to correct socially unacceptable criminal behaviors through rehabilitative means and efforts. It also creates an atmosphere that is sound rehabilitative and therapeutic. It provides opportunities that help inmates acquire social values and skills necessary for getting productive citizens. Lastly, it enhances rehabilitation efforts and prepares the inmates for community entry, reducing recidivism rates.
Ethical issues
Some of the ways I would handle officers’ ethical issues include, first, leading by example. The officers must act with integrity and honesty. They must be courageous in facing inmates such that reporting inmate altercation may not be an issue out of fear, corruption, or dishonesty. Second, I should keep reminding them to remain impartial (O’Neal, 2019). They should avoid personal grudges, political beliefs, prejudices, aspirations, and friendships, especially with the inmates or other facility workers. The law has to be always upheld without favor, compromise, or malice. I would also let the officers take responsibility for maintaining their standard of professional conduct. They have to take every reasonable action in maintaining and improving the standard of conduct.
In conclusion, working as a correctional officer is stressful. That is because working in prison is dangerous, and officers are always concerned about physical violence. Again, there is overcrowding in many understaffed prisons, forcing officers to work mandatory overtime and inconsistent rotating shifts. Other examples of bias include making decisions that are based on bias. Allowing personal beliefs like religious, political, among others, to influence the way officers to discharge their duty is unethical. Officers should always uphold the law not based on any personal beliefs. The two main sources of stress associated with corrections work include structural and organizational issues within the prison administration and inconsistent or weak leadership practices.
