TASK: Pick one to the questions below. Write a paper in which you engage critically with your chosen question.

LENGTH: 1200-1400 words

THE ASSIGNMENT

Engage critically with what you have learned this semester. Your task is to write a final essay. The essay must be written by you, for the purpose of this class assignment, and you must adhere to SFC’s policy on academic dishonesty. 

Purpose:

(a) demonstrate an understanding of our course material

(b) demonstrate your ability to apply media literacy skills

Task:

Pick ONE (1) of the essay prompts below. Pick the topic (sample nursing essay examples by the best nursing assignment writing service) you are most curious about and that you want to spend time researching and writing about. 

Apply your media literacy skills and research the topic (sample nursing essay examples by the best nursing assignment writing service). Find sources, information and concrete mass media examples to build your argument/position.

You must establish a clear argument with at least FOUR outside sources. At least ONE of these must be an academic, peer-reviewed source from the library databases. You want articles and/or chapters from books. You must use these sources in your essay. Adding them to the bibliography only will not suffice.

Include in-text citations for all quotes, paraphrased sections and information you use in your essay (APA citation style Links to an external site.). Make clear the author/publication date/page numbers of the readings when you mention them in text.

You must also include a properly formatted bibliography in APA referencing style at the end of your essay. If you need a refresher on citation practices, refer to these OWL APA resources Links to an external site.and/or get in touch with the Centre for Learning and Leadership.

Essay Topics

Pick ONE (1) of the following essay options: 

Option 1:

Citizen journalism refers to the gathering and sharing of news and information by public citizens, particularly via mobile and social media, sometimes via traditional media.

Citizen journalism is often criticized for failing to meet professional standards. In what instances do you think that the criticism is justified? Identify two or three news stories that might have been told very differently or not at all had citizen journalists not documented events. How can you tell if this type of reporting is legitimate or not?

The TV show NCIS became the world’s most popular TV dramas in 2013 when it entered its 12th season. It has been a top rated show ever since. It also has led to three spinoffs featuring stories set in Los Angeles, Hawai’i and New Orleans. What accounts for the international appeal of NCIS? Identify a number of popular series with spinoffs. Do you think the spinoffs proved as popular as the originals? Why or why not might this be the case?

Option 3:

With the 2003 US invasion of Iraq the US military introduced a new approach to managing journalists in times of war. It required all 775 reporters and photo photographers to be embedded, meaning attached to military units. How does the practice of embedding journalists affect the quality of news reporting? Does being embedded help or hinder journalists’ pursuit of the truth?

Prior restraint is when the government prevents or blocks the publication, broadcasting, showing, or distribution of media content, whether in print, over the air, in movie theaters, or online.

Do you think the government should have more or less power to exercise prior restraint and block publication and/or broadcast of material that it feels might hurt national security interests or violate obscenity and indecency laws, even from citizens posting to social media sites?
