What college should I attend?

Purpose:
To compose an essay that answers ONE of the following two questions:
1. What college should I attend? 2. What career should I pursue?
Strategy:
Proposal. Before you propose a solution, you must prove that a problem or question exists. Whether you choose to write about colleges or careers, a common problem is that there are so many options, right? Another concern is that these are major life decisions that will likely affect other aspects of your life. These two factors–the number of options and the weight of the decision–can make for exciting possibilities, but they can also cause us a lot of stress.
What’s the best way to relieve some of this stress? Research.

Writing a proposal essay includes a thorough, well-informed exploration of a solution to a problem. Sometimes, multiple options are considered. For our purposes, you will only write about what you think is the best option. In other words, you are making an argument. Some people (like your parents or friends) may disagree, but your excellent research has led you to what you believe is the best choice. Another way to think about it is that you are making a proposal to yourself.
Organization:
A common approach to a proposal essay includes posing a question, examining options, choosing an option, and arguing why you think this way. Of course, you should always follow your professor’s requirements since everyone will have different expectations.
Essay 4 must use the following structure:

1. Introduction: Begin with a hook such as an interesting fact, quote, or general insight. In a general manner, discuss the issue at hand (either choosing a college to attend or a career to pursue). Explain the challenges of making such a decision. Develop this idea toward a focused thesis statement that A) identifiesthe exact problem/situation and B) proposesthe best solution for you. 2. Narrative: In paragraph two, discuss your influences. Who or what has influenced your academic or career goals? (Remember, you’re only writing about a college major OR a career path, not both.) Can you identify a specific moment of realization? How did you first learn of this option?
