Regulation for Nursing Practice
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a nationwide organization in the US which offers supervisory services to nurses in the US. The duties of this organization include regulation of nursing practice through licensing of nurses after administering the NCLEX examinations (NCSBN, 2019). The laid down criterion for licensing requires a nurse to pass the examination before an application for licensing for state practice for registered nurses while APPNs acquire permission to practice across states. Additionally, regulatory initiatives of the NCSBN also take place through disciplining of nurses who violate the professional code of conduct (NCSBN, 2019). The process of instilling discipline occurs by way of censure in which the license of such a nurse may be withdrawn thereby preventing him or her from practice. Notably, operations of the NCSBN are governed by a statute which outlines the scope of mandate for the body.
At the core of operations by the NCSBN is a board of directors who main function is to carry out administrative practices of the body on a day to day basis (NCSBN, 2019). The main function of the board is to supervise compliance by ensuring that all nurses perform their duties in a way which furthers the interest of the profession. This role is spearheaded by the NCSBN with the Helpance of other nursing bodies which operate within states. It is crucial to note that the regulatory role of the NCSBN is driven by the need for the statutory body to ensure issues affecting public health receive paramount attention (NCSBN, 2019). Therefore, ensuring that nurses comply with standards which stipulate professional conduct and acceptable code of practice to customers guarantee high quality services hence leading to quicker rates of service delivery and access to healthcare.
The American Nurses Association (ANA) is one of the organizations whose functions closely relate to the role of National Council of State Boards of Nursing in the US. However, whereas the NCSBN is a national regulator, ANA is a professional body which offers interactive services to registered nurses (NCSBN, 2019). Notably, ANA performs its role by ensuring that registered nurses receive professional development through peer to peer interaction as younger professional meet and learn from more experienced members (American Nursing Association, 2019).
Additionally, ANA accords financial support to other categories of nurses who require specialized training and skills to perform their duties in an effective manner. For instance, home health nurses and APRNs are under a duty to further their education by going through specialized training before an application for licensing (American Nursing Association, 2019). Therefore, ANA is a core player in furtherance of interest of nurses in the US through educational and training sponsorship for practicing nurses and professional development functions across the states.
The differences between ANA and NCSBN include that whereas the former is a professional body, the latter is a national regulator. Moreover, the difference in the two organizations is also seen in the functional elements in that ANA offers career and professional development platforms to registered nurses while the NCSBN is a national regulator of services whose role is to ensure discipline through compliance measures among nursing professional in the US (NCSBN, 2019). Therefore, the roles of the two bodies are interrelated insofar as they both seek to ensure that both the interest of nurses and public health concerns are addressed in a comprehensive manner (NCSBN, 2019). This position is justified by the fact that ANA offers both financial and emotional support to professional nurses on one hand while the NCSBN ensures compliance hence protecting interest of the public.
The board of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing is the primary administration agency of the regulator. At the present moment, the NCSBN board undertakes registration of practicing nurses through licensure and administering NCLEX examinations (NCSBN, 2019). the main aim of the examination process which is undertake by service providers on behalf of the NCLEX examinations is to allow the board to gauge the level of competence of different nursing health professionals across states in the US before licensing. The board is made up of eleven directors sitting in it as members under the leadership of its chairman who is statutorily appointed and approved by the senate (NCSBN, 2019). Justifiably, the directors of the board exercise enormous power over nursing professionals through the regulatory role in which the board possibly disciplines nurses who violate the professional code of conduct. A person becomes a member of the board through nomination after an electoral process before approval by the senate through its mandated committee.
. The Social Security Act Amendments of 1965 is a federal statute which deals with matters of national healthcare insurance. The Minnesota Nurse Practice Act is a piece of legislation which outlines requirements which must be attained in general practice of nursing. The law stipulates the scope of nursing practice within the state by outlining qualification requirements and standards of procedure in practice which must be achieved prior to completion of the process of registration and licensure.
