Electronic Health records as an emerging technology in the health industry has been developed to make healthcare easier and manageable by both the physicians and the patients. EHRs have given patients a sense of ownership as they take part in monitoring and Assessment of their own health. But as with most data held in a common pool over the internet, the biggest risk is hacking and intrusion of the very sensitive information by outsiders. The efficiency and the designated privacy is highly compromised by external factors that seek to retrieve the information for their own gains.
The computerized health information systems collect, store and display information of the patients hence creating well organized health record and facilitating easy access of medical information of the patients. EHRs aim at reducing medical errors and enhance effective communication and information sharing among the physicians. The records also aim at lowering the cost of national healthcare costs. coordination of healthcare and the quality of healthcare services by managing the medical records of the patients more effectively.
The federal government has made efforts to encourage the adoption of the EHRs by making use of incentives within the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health ACT (HITECH). The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has also taken part in offering incentives to facilitate the adoption of the technology and has gone as far as penalizing the failure of provider engagement. Factors such as the high cost of installation and maintenance of the systems, lack of investment resources, complexity of the systems, lack of adequately skilled staff, and concerns of illegal tampering of the records and hackings have been raised, (Reisman, 2017). The adoption rate of the EHRs is low despite being an innovative technology and has met a lot of resistance from physicians.
The topic of the visibility of the EHRs is very important for discussion as it highlights on the risk factors that can be easily ignored. The government involvement in the EHRs has been argued to be a premature move with little research. Some researchers have gone ahead to argue that the government rely’s on fallacies when hypothesizing the many benefits that can be gained from the adoption of EHRs. The government and other organizations override the fact that the new technology carries unexpected adverse effects such as hacking of patient information. Other consequences may be associated with medication error that may lead to the death of a patient and hence causing endless legal battles between the facility and the family of the patient.
In an attempt to promote healthcare through Subsidies, the U.S government has instead undermined the adoption of the technology. The lower cost of patient care has led to the loss of opportunities for better patient care, (Marlow, 2017). Physicians are les motivated to adopt the technology as the previously existing incentive have been stripped off by the government’s move to subsidize the healthcare cost.
The government and other organizations should instead adopt policies that have potential to enhance promote innovation within the healthcare sectors. For example, having policies that promote the adoption of the EHRs within the healthcare industries by providing incentives to physicians and facilities that adopt the systems. The government should quit the assumption of full interoperability of the EHRs and their ability to minimize medical errors and enhance diagnoses without conducting a proper research.
