Literature Review On Violence against Women

Violence Against Women
A comprehensive study on violence against women remains a fundamental research subject in the academic field. The different dimensions that this research could be conducted increases the legitimacy of research on the matter and broadens the interested audience so that the voice can be mitigated in the society. It is also important to understand that violence against women has become a criminal justice concern in different jurisdictions since it started to be recognized as severe public health and public safety challenge. Extensive research on the matter would become a continuous vital process that will ensure the development of a better criminal justice system intervention.
According to Richie (2004), many women are considered safer currently than they were in the 70s because society has obtained a greater understanding of the challenge. This is because research would play a greater role in developing a better-informed public and offering support for community services. This kind of support happens because of how grievous the challenge is. Krahe (2018) noted that a study done by the World Health Organization asserted that 30% of women had experienced violence from an intimate partner. Also, the study asserted that 7.2% of women had reported a non-partner sexual assault.
Violence against women comes happens in variant ways apart from the physical and sexual abuse from the intimate partners, the violence could come from parents, among women who are in relationships having more than one abusive partner, among women accused of using violence, or those that victimized by the violence among others. Richie (2004) also indicates that the different forms of violence mostly happen concurrently. One woman would be dealing with physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, financial abuse, and others, and finding it challenging to leave the situation. According to Montgomery et al. (2015), almost 1 in 3 American women have survived physical violence, while at least 1 in 10 women has survived rape in their lifetime. The United States takes all kinds of violence against women as a critical national public health concern, evidenced by the passing of the Violence Against Women Act by President Obama. The American population understands that any form of violence is bound to cause a myriad of mental health challenges among the women who deal with the many effects (García-Moreno et al., 2015). Therefore, they find it prudent that various interventions within the criminal justice system, health sector, social work, among others, are implemented to aid the victims while dealing with the perpetrators.
Peterman et al. (2020) would take a different approach to the research and concentrate on the risk factors that contribute to the probability of a woman being abused. The factors identified by the study were linked to crises and times of unrest since they have been noted to be situations that increase the risk of interpersonal violence. Therefore, some factors included economic insecurities, quarantines, conflict-related unrest and instability, and exposure to exploitative relationships due to demographic changes. Sen & Bolsoy (2017) conducted a large cross-sectional study on the risk factors generally related to violence and stated that the basic factors include the education, employment, and social security of that woman. Considering the education level factor, the study noted that women’s participation in education and business life had been impeded by families, relatives, and acquaintances in most developing countries. This forces the women to largely depend on their spouses for economic support, which exposes them to violence.
Within criminal justice systems, different member countries to various organizations such as the United Nations and the Inter-American Development Bank have ratified various regulations that require them to consider violence against women as a crime that attracts legal repercussions. For instance, the member countries of the IDB would ratify the International Convention to Prevent, Punish, and Eradicate Violence Against Women, which defined violence against women and established that the latter have the right of living a life free of violence (Inter-American Development Bank, 2014). Any violence against women constitutes a violation of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Notably, numerous studies would acknowledge that integration of the criminal justice system into dealing with violence against women would face numerous challenges. These include inadequate laws and procedures to address the subject, limited awareness and capacity in the laws within the criminal justice system on the issue, underreporting and poor case processing, the risks affiliated with prison sentences, and lack of budgetary resources to address the preceding themes on the issue (Inter-American Development Bank, 2014). There has been a consistent call for different criminal justice systems to increase their capacities to deal with the matter competently.
Despite the numerous studies on violence against women, the challenge still has research gaps that remain underexplored. According to Contreras-Urbina et al. (2019), studies on violence against women have primarily failed to take an ethical approach despite researching human subjects. This study is generally very complex and requires considerable planning in conjunction with financial and human resources. Therefore, more studies must be done to identify robust and adaptable methodology and several alternative plans that will efficiently and effectively handle these studies’ ethical and safety issues. Another important research subject that needs to be done is exploring the explanations given as to why men engage in aggressive conduct against women at different levels (Krahe, 2018). This information will provide a proper basis for the prevention measures that should be implemented.
