Week 5 Discussion Forum

1. As you prepare your grant budget–please share the materials you will be including. This should include ALL costs associated with your project (salaries, direct and indirect costs, cost of equipment, etc.) as if you are starting from the beginning without any resources being provided by your project implementation site.

2. Please review the instructions for the funding source you chose in week 2. How much is the grant worth? Are there any details for what the money can be used for–if so, please share them.

3. Review your list of costs for question 1 and based on the amount of money provided in the grant, determine which costs you would ask for with your chosen funding source. Justify why you would choose these items?

Question 1
The degree of specificity for a budget is dependent on the basic requirements of the donor as well as the nature of the project. For my Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) project, I will focus on developing a complete and well-thought budget that aims at reinforcing the aspect of credibility and increasing the likelihood of securing funding. As such, the estimates are to build upon the justifications offered at the proposal level to facilitate the provision of reasonable and wise ways of using the funds (Waxman, 2017). The budget will begin with a summary of the subsequent sections written in an outline form with major subdivisions and headings. A total will be included at the end of each major component requiring funding. The costs will be based on the personnel and non-personnel ones. At the personnel section, the major items will include; contract and consultant services, salaries, and fringe benefits such as health insurance. As for the non-personnel section, it will be characterized by utilities, office supplies, rental or purchase of equipment, and space rental, among others (Thomas et al., 2017). The primary focus will be that the continuation, implementation, and phase-down costs are sufficiently met. This involves the consideration of long-term financial commitments such as leases, developments, audits, Assessment systems, and the maintenance and implementation of information is substantially regarded. The grant budget proposal will be structured around the compliance with the requirements provided by the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) to ensure that it is potentially successful and approved for funding.
Question 2
The NINR has a special program known as the T32 that is focused on the administration of funding to extend nursing science through the integration of new technologies to research questions while improving the effectiveness and nature of interventions. However, T32 does not accept applicants from DNP programs (NINR, n.d.). This means that for my project, I can only apply for funding through the National Research Service Awards (NRSA) stipends that offer up to $800 annually allocated to each trainee’s travel costs. The NRSA also offers above $500,000 worth of grants but with an agreement obtained from their staff to assure that the IC accepts the application (NINR, n.d.). The stipends offered by the NRSA are categorized based on the level of education based on individual fellowships and institutional training research. These stipends also include the Maximizing Access to Research Centers (MACR). For my DNP project, I will be focusing on the development of research-based on educational intervention measures for the provider’s lack of knowledge and adherence to opioid prescribing practices. Since my project is categorized under the postdoctoral level of education, the stipend to acquire depends on the number of years of experience based on clinical duties, internship, and teaching Helpantship, among other factors. The level of the stipend has to include the base salary or the remuneration compensated by the institution in which I am permanently affiliated with during the allocation of the fund. Notably, the NINR does not support fringe benefits for postdoctoral levels. Below is a table for the grant provision for DNP projects for the year 2018.
Career Level Years of Experience Stipend for FY 2018 Monthly stipend
Postdoctoral 0 $48,432 $4,036
1 $48,804 $4,067
2 $49,188 $4,099
3 $51,324 $4,277
4 $53,184 $4,432
5 $55,308 $4,609
6 $55,528 $4,794
7 or more $59,736 $4,978

Question 3
Based on my lists of costs and considering the amount of money offered by the NINR through the grant, I would ask for specific costs that fall under the category of my chosen funding source. The list includes; contract and consultant services and salaries because these costs facilitate the effective implementation of the intervention through the involvement of relevant personnel. The personnel involved must be compensated and their basic requirements met throughout their time while ensuring that the project is effectively promoted from theory to practice. The other crucial costs are training and research development, office supplies, utilities, and space rental. These costs are vital to the provision of the required resources to facilitate the implementation of the intervention program.
