Option 1 . Review with NetAcad

As part of Discussion Board #4 assignment, students should have accounts on the NetAcad. If revision required, please identify 10-12 areas from NetAcad, and ask them to review . To earn grade for this assignment, students will perform those steps from NetAcad and submit a document in canvas ( week14.netAcad.doc ) with all screen captures .

Create a script using name week14.sh (note: don’t forget shebang and execute permission) and test it with an echo. Print “My Name – Your Name!” on the screen — Replace ‘Your Name’ with your First and Last Name ( 10)
Modify the script from step 1 to include a variable. The variable will hold the contents of the message “My Name Your Name!” screen — Replace ‘Your Name’ with your First and Last Name ( 10)
Store the output of the command “hostname” in a variable. Display “This script is running on _.” where “_” is the output of the “hostname” command. You will see your machine ( 10)
Display all NOVA campus names “AL”,”AN”,”LO”,”MA”,”Wo”,and “MEC” on the screen with each appearing on a separate line. Try not to allow any gap between the lines. (20)
Add a function in this script that will display the number of files in the present working directory. Name this function “no_of_files” and call this function in your script. If you use variable in your function, remember to make it a local variable ( hint : use ls ) ( 40)
Modify the script from step 5 and make the “no_of_files” function accept a directory as an argument. Next, have the function display the name of the directory followed by a dash ( -) Finally display the number of files to the screen on the next line. Call the function at least three times. First on the “/usr” directory, next on the “/lib” Directory and finally on the “/etc” directory. (40) In this script, include a function that displays the number of files in the current working directory. Name this function “no of files” and use it in your script. If you use variables in your function, make sure they are local variables ( hint : use ls ) ( 40)
Make the “no of files” function accept a directory as an argument in the script from step 5. The function should then display the directory’s name followed by a dash. Finally, on the next line, display the number of files on the screen. At least three times, call the function. First on the “/usr” directory, next on the “/lib” Directory and finally on the “/etc” directory. (40)
Test your script. Generously use echo to test the script. Submit as directed

Option 2 . Shell Scripting

In this assignment, students will write bash shell scripts. (They are not allowed to write Python scripts or use any Python code, or use any other programming languages. Encourage creativity – They are free to use scripts with many lines of code, or try to solve problems as in one-liners script (First one is better practice, the latter one is more respected but error-prone).

Direction :

You need to submit two things

A document with a screen capture of all the steps, ( week14_script.doc ) create the document before you start the assignment, so that you can take screen captures while performing the steps,
Your script ( wek14.sh ) (script for this assignment should be saved as .sh file)
(If you are using NOVA VDI please check with your instructor before starting the assignment)

Start your Fedora VM which you have created as part of Project 1. Each step in the assignment MUST labeled with a comment
