Journal Article Critique: Food Safety
Public Health Significance
The study by Assob et al. (2012) has a public health significance since it demonstrates that people at risk of food contamination. It shows that street foods are not prepared with hygiene handling practices that could lead to diseases. It demonstrates the presence of faecal-oral parasite in street food. Preparation of food does not observe minimal sanitary standards. Toilets and lavatories are also not available. Vendors do not clean their hands effectively or wash the utensils with clean water, thus putting their customers’ health at risk. Thus, the study is effective in demonstrating that people preparing street food do not observe hygiene, thus exposing their customers to health risks.
The findings of the study have both a local and global impact. It demonstrates that cities with street foods are at risk of infections due to the poor preparation and observance of hygiene. Although the study is carried out in Buea, south-west region Cameroon, the dynamics are the same for other cities with high unemployment rates. For instance, Mexico and other developing countries are at risk of such poor sanitation.
The study fulfills an essential public health gap, demonstrating that 56.7 percent of the sampled population was infected. It presents a health gap that food vendors should be educated on personal hygiene and safe handling practices. It also shows the absence of regulatory practices and medical procedures to ensure there is no food contamination.
Critique the Methodology
The observational study uses field observations to collect data. The study also used a cross-sectional study to study the four zones. The data was also analyzed using a two-tailed Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The methodology is effective since observation helps collect data accurately compared to questionnaires. The use of surveys would also result in lying among the vendors. The observational study also captures what the vendors do compare to what they might say. A cross-sectional study is also effective since it provides a snapshot of the frequency or transmission of disease. It is also used to assess the health needs or burden of a disease in a population. What could be have been done differently is widen the study area and increase the number of participants that the researcher observes.
Interpret the Results
The results of the study indicate that various feacal-oral parasites infected 56.7 percent of the population. They also show that poor hygiene, deworming, and poor personal hygiene contribute to the spread of the disease. I agree with the results since feacal-oral parasites thrive in case of poor hygiene. I also believe that the major contributing factors are personal hygiene, poor sanitation, and toilet facilities.
Appraise the Results
The findings are effective and reliable. They can thus be used to make changes in the policy framework. One of the actions is that healthcare workers should train vendors on how to observe hygiene. The government should also implement policies to ensure the vendors have facilities such as toilets and hand washing. The actions will ensure that the source of the parasites is eliminated. It will also protect the clients of street food from infections.
Part Two
The findings of the second article by Calopez et al. (2017) support the findings of the first article. They both show that street food is exposed to various faecal-oral parasites due to poor hygiene purposes. The study is based in Iloilo City, Philippines. The objective was to examine the level of awareness. The findings are similar to the first article that although people are aware, the practices are still unhygienic.
My opinion about the issue of street food and the exposure to faecal-oral parasites has not changed. It has only reinforced the belief that street food is prepared using unsafe practices. I also believe the government has not done enough to safeguard the public.
