Gender Equality and Women Empowerment
Gender equality is structured around the provision of individuals with equal rights and opportunities. Even though every individual long for such equality, there are numerous cases of discrimination across the society primarily based on a person’s gender. Women are on the receiving end of such a social injustice in such a way that they are deprived of equal opportunities across the political, educational, and workplace settings. Providing equal opportunities for women not only promotes gender equality, but it also creates a powerful platform for meeting a vast array of international development goals. When women are empowered, the productivity and health status of the community, family, and nation are effectively met, thereby benefiting everyone. In this regard, women have been exposed to a global society that limits them numerous opportunities for economic participation, political representation, and higher education compared to men; a situation that creates an imbalanced community that is shortchanged concerning the achievement of the available potential for growth and development.
To increase the efforts towards the substantial achievement of gender equality, the involved authorities and personnel have to focus on the aspect of education. Although the global environment has achieved tremendous results in the promotion of gender parity as it applies to the educational context, there is a significant percentage of girls who are yet to access primary and higher education compared to boys (Hartati et al., 2019). This issue is most prevalent across the developing nations considering that the families that are unable to afford the relevant costs, such as uniforms and fees, are bound to prioritize boys for education over girls. However, by educating a girl, there is a higher probability of increasing the return on investment since they will raise smaller families and postpone marriages. Educated girls are also more likely to educate their own children, which increases their competence and professionalism levels for economic participation.
The other crucial factor to consider when focusing on the adoption and implementation of gender equality is the safety and health of women. According to Keplinger et al. (2019), the rates of HIV/AIDS infections among women and young girls is an increasingly impactful issue. The issue can be associated with gender-based violence and limited opportunities for health education. In some countries, women are bound to acquire complications during childbirth or have limited access to infant and prenatal care. In addition, girls as young as below the age of 18 years enter into marriage. To combat this issue, it is imperative to focus on the administration of quality maternal care that would educate mothers on the importance of effective decision-making practices based on their personal health and that of their young ones.
Finally, the achievement of gender equality is also structured around the practice of focusing on political and economic empowerment. According to Raj (2017), women only own approximately 1% of the world’s wealth even though they constitute to over 50% of the global population. Across the developing and developed nations, women work for long hours across the domestic setting. There are some places where women are not allowed the right to inherit or own a piece of land, get promoted in their respective workplaces, or earn income for themselves. Another case of job discrimination includes being prohibited to access credit. Besides, women are underrepresented as decision-makers across the private and public domains. It is also important to consider that although the political participation of women is crucial to the promotion of gender equality, they are outnumbered within the global legislatures. Since the two-thirds representation law was implemented, there have been significant changes in the political participation of women. The law requires every level of governance to have members who comprise of at least two-thirds from any gender (O’Connell, 2013). This law is also being embraced across almost all contexts of the political global environment.
It is only when both genders are equally represented that a nation can reach its potential for growth and development. Such a level of equality can only be achieved by combating the subordination of women to target the issues of refraining them from the exposure to equal rights based on economic participation, education, and health. Women should also be involved in the crucial decision-making practices. Countries that have embraced gender equality have achieved tremendous growth and development. The outdated social structure that prevails of women being involved in domestic activities only is what facilitates the limitations imposed to women in the access of higher education and leadership roles. However, when women participate as equally as men in the most crucial contexts of the society, the economic growth of any country is bound to increase alongside its overall growth and development across other aspects of the society. In this regard, the respective governments are obliged to implement stringent laws that focus on the promotion of gender equality based on the increased inclusion of women across various contexts of the society. Besides, educational measures should be adopted to increase the awareness of women rights within the society.
