Ethics and Code of Conduct
Ethics and integrity will play a crucial role in determining my qualification, competence, and professionalism within the respective field of application. To be considered a qualified law enforcement officer, I am obligated to portray a life lived based on morals and values. One of the reasons why ethics and integrity will be crucial is that law enforcement employers are allowed to decline my application if they discover a pattern of immoral behavior. Although, in some instances, some occasional and minimal immoral activities may be overlooked based on their intensity and contexts, I will be subjected to a scrutinizing Assessment of personality, beliefs, ideologies, and values. This is to determine my level of competence as a law enforcement officer. The other reason why ethics and integrity will be important is that law enforcement is highly competitive, and the recruiters have to be critical when it comes to the different personalities they intend to hire. In this regard, with the high moral ground, my chances of securing a position as a law enforcement officer will be relatively high, considering that the people with moral lapses have a limited chance of being hired. Finally, demonstrating a high measure of ethics and integrity will convince the recruiters that I hold high standards of professionalism, which is the primary requirement for the job (Mateescu et al., 22). This will show that I can discharge my duties by applying ethical principles while upholding the standard rule of law.
Morality, ethics, and law differ when it comes to affecting the decisions made by law enforcement officers. One of the aspects in which they differ is virtue ethics that entails personal attitudes, values, and ideologies. In this case, the decision-making process of law enforcement officers may be different, considering that each individual’s character is not similar to that of their counterpart. The other aspect of difference is the situation at hand. The law enforcement officer may prioritize one factor, such as the law, over morality, because the circumstances are distinct.
Law enforcement officers are obliged to incorporate a code of conduct, morality, and ethics in their professional lives. This can be achieved through their involvement of supervisors who work diligently to monitor the behavior of their employees and reward the correct and appropriate conduct. The leaders must penalize immoral conduct and confront ethical issues to promote an effective culture of ethics within the workplace. The other approach for promoting ethics, morality, and values at the professional level is through the establishment of a clear mission statement that the respective organization ascribes to with a concise set of operating values that define the standards for employee behavior (Garner et al., 13). A strong and clear message of moral behavior implies that the agency does not tolerate or compromise on ethics. As for their personal lives, the law enforcement officers are obliged to align their values and beliefs through constant practice. They can use case studies to increase the effectiveness of gradual reinforcement while discussing their views and experiences while allowing other people to test their moral reasoning skills.
The state of Ohio has established a clear and easily understandable code of conduct for its law enforcement officers. One of the most important aspects that relates to the activities of law enforcement officers in my state is keeping their private lives unsullied (Stinson, Liederbach 7 Brewer Jr., 9). This allows the officers to focus on professionalism while administering their duties and responsibilities. The other common aspect is being always mindful of the welfare of others and maintaining a considerable measure of courageous calm in the face of adversity or danger.
