Assignment: Applying Current Literature to Clinical Practice
Psychiatric mental health nursing practice is one of the newest disciplines to be licensed to provide psychotherapy as such, the majority of psychotherapy research is centered on other disciplines such as psychology, social work, marriage/family therapy, art therapy, psychiatry, and mental health counseling. This makes it essential for you to be able to translate current literature from other disciplines into your own clinical practice. For this Assignment, you practice this skill by examining literature on group work and group therapy and considering its applicability to your own clients.

Group Psychotherapy in Women with a History of Sexual Abuse
The focus of the study is on the impact of group psychotherapy in women with a history of sexual abuse. The focus was on women with a history of sexual abuse with childhood or adult abuse. The research was a prospective cohort study. It involved 47 women with a history of sexual abuse. Women without a history of sexual abuse were excluded from the study (Sayın et al., 2013). The study finds that psychotherapy is effective in reducing levels of depression. The limitations of the study do not affect the use of the findings in clinical practice.
The participants of the study were 47 women with a history of sexual abuse, both childhood and adult sexual abuse. The participants were selected since sexual abuse causes psychiatric and psychological sequelae (Sayın et al., 2013). The objective of the study was to examine psychotherapeutic approaches that can solve the psychological and psychiatric issues. The population was subjected to group psychotherapy to assess its impact. The focus of the study was to involve the participants in 12 sessions.
The settings of the group was involving all the participants in 12-session psychotherapy. The participants were subjected to various Assessments including Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, the Clinician Administered Post‐traumatic Stress Disorder Scale, the Dissociative Experiences Scale, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and the Group Therapeutic Factors Questionnaire. Re-Assessments were carried out during 6th and 12th session. The participants were subjected to follow up session after six months (Sayın et al., 2013).
The curative factors that align with the group psychotherapy include installation of hope, universality, imparting information, interpersonal learning, and group cohesiveness. Installation of hope is essential for women who have been abused. Sexual abuse can lead to depression or trauma. University is an essential factor to help women in group psychotherapy (Sayın et al., 2013). It helps women to know they are not alone in their predicament. Imparting information helps in reflecting on the experiences. The factors are essential in group psychotherapy.
Interpersonal learning boosts honest communication among the women. It helps them to share their experiences to avoid depression. Group cohesiveness helps in promoting a sense of security and safety among the participants. It helps them in self-disclosure that is effective in helping women to share their experiences (Sayın et al., 2013). The women in the various groups should learn socializing techniques. The techniques are effective to avoid isolation that can trigger depression and anxiety. The curative factors are important in the process of recovery.
The exclusion criteria was women and not men. The study excluded women without a history of childhood and or adulthood sexual abuse. The study did not consider any woman without a background of sexual abuse. The purpose was to measure the levels of depression and ability to reduce them through group psychotherapy. The exclusion criteria involved women and not girls (Sayın et al., 2013). The purpose was to assess the level of depression and anxiety among adults. All participants consented to collection of data. Participants who did not consent to the study were excluded.
The findings of the study shows that psychotherapy is effective in reducing levels of depression. It shows that women who participated in the group therapy recorded low levels of depression after engaging in psychotherapy (Sayın et al., 2013). Group psychotherapy was effective in addressing levels of anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. The findings can be applied in clinical practice to address the issues that women face in society after sexual abuse. The study also finds that group psychotherapy is effective among women from diverse backgrounds.
The limitations of the study include low representation of the women. The study only had 47 women with a background of child or adult sexual abuse. The few individuals did not effectively represent the views of all the women (Sayın et al., 2013). Further studies can support the findings and effectiveness of group therapy. However, the limitations do not undermine the use of the findings. The findings are effective in showing that group psychotherapy is an effective approach in addressing depression and anxiety among women with a history of sexual abuse.
