Practicum Journal Reflection
The problem I have identified during the practicum experience is a lack of management and communication. Poor management skills have led to poor job satisfaction due to long hours of work, lack of incentives, and increased risk of cyber security. The majority of the staff are complaining of the management’s decision to employ few workers despite the rising number of patients. Poor job satisfaction is attributed to a lack of incentives such as salary increments, bonus packages, and holidays. For instance, some employees have been working without off days for almost a year. Poor communication is attributed to the low commitment by the management to empower the employees. The staff receive information late and sometimes without participation in the decision-making. The communication system lacks two-way traffic of receiving information and giving feedback. The challenges have been detrimental to the growth of the organization and patient satisfaction.
Stanley and Stanley (2018) appreciate that leadership and management in healthcare settings are vital in achieving positive outcomes. Value-based practice inspires the behavior of nurses in healthcare settings. Clinical leaders inspire innovation, change, and making better choices to improve the quality of outcomes. For instance, a proactive style of leadership affects the quality of interaction, ability to understand and address problems and focus on positive patient outcomes. According to Stanley and Stanley (2018), proactive leaders can implement changes that can improve the quality of care and morale of nurses. Implementation of changes that support evidence-based practice is crucial for realizing quality outcomes.
Boamah (2018) shows the value of transformative leadership in quality management outcomes. The findings argue that workplace empowerment improves the morale of the nurses, boosts their skills, and provides growth opportunities. Transformative leaders in the nursing environment involve the nurses in the decision-making process. It involves embracing a staff-centered communication model. Nurses appreciate the innovative communication that ensures individuals receive information on time. It is vital to focus on communication as a tool that can improve patient outcomes. Lack of sufficient and timely communication channels can increase the risk of medical errors.
Gharaveis et al. (2018) appreciate that communication is vital for achieving teamwork. The spirit of teamwork helps the staff to tackle challenges in unison. It helps the workers to embrace challenges and contribute to the ideas for evidence-based practice. Communication and teamwork are essential components of nursing. It can help the management to resolve different problems such as medical errors. When teams coordinate, they reduce the level of stress on patients, reduce burnout, enhance safety, and cut down on medical expenditure. Teamwork allows for more reasoned decision-making, increases information sharing, and quality of patient care.
The problem was handled in a manner that is consistent with theories and evidence-based concepts. One of the first steps taken is to reshuffle the management of the hospital. According to Gharaveis et al. (2018), allocating proactive and transformative leaders was critical in changing the landscape of the nursing environment. Another change was to ensure the employees are participating in the decision-making process. Decision-making involves evidence-based practices that emphasize the patient. The changes were vital in achieving a patient-centered approach to care for the patients. Another vital change in the organization was training for the workforce. The training was vital in sharing information among the staff. Communication is critical in boosting relationships among the staff and improving the quality of outcomes.
