Over the years, Hollywood has created several shows of which the plot unfolds in the healthcare setting. For example, Grey’s anatomy. I love this show, and have watched it since before I became a nurse. Now that I am a nurse, I watch the show and constantly think to myself “There’s no way a doctor would be doing that, that’s what the nurses do!”. Viewers who haven’t experienced a hospitalization or don’t work in health care, are given the impression the Doctor is the be-all-end-all to healthcare, or the “boss” so to speak, and the nurse is that nice lady who fetches ice chips and give them medication when their tummy hurts. In reality, Physicians are the ones who write our orders (most of the time) based upon our thorough, hands on assessment of the patient we have spent 12 hours or more with. General society does not view the nurse as the prepared, skilled, omniscient being who delivers majority of the care to our patients. Since the general public receives most of their impression and knowledge of the changing healthcare system from social media, news and television shows the best way to educate them about how the healthcare setting truly functions, aside from being actually admitted to the hospital, would be to provide them with a realistic inside view of how it functions. There are some programs that portray the reality of some healthcare settings, and some groups on social media who portray the reality of nursing and healthcare.
