Toxic Shock Syndrome
Toxic shock syndrome is an infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus, which can result from menstruation and tampon use. Exotoxins produced by the bacteria cross into the blood stream from insertion or prolonged use of a tampon. Onset is generally five days after the start of menstruation.
