Analysis of Psychological Studies
The principles applied by psychologists in their research works covers the best interest of the participants involved. Such principles include but not limited to respect, justice and integrity. The principles have been formalized to the common rule that is in conformity with the federal laws. Therefore, the deduction made is the good of covering the human rights in the principles. Guidelines are provided on how to conduct studies (American Psychological Association, 2012).
Pros and cons of the study. The Milgram’s studies major advantage was the application of the debrief principle. He exhaustively explained at the conclusions the details of the study to the participants. The important part of the principle is to embrace the ethical validity which enables the participants to make informed decision. On the other hand, the main disadvantage of the studies was conduction of the research in the laboratory thus not resembling the behavior in the real world. The psychological experiments have proved that the human desire of conformity may lead to mistrust of people’s own ability and may end up causing blindness to others from a single blind individual. Moreover, it may induce harm to the defenseless (Films for the Humanities & Sciences, 2009).
Some of the terms encountered in the psychological research include informed consent, confidentiality, deception, debrief and institutional review board. Informed consent refers to the seeking of the go ahead of both the participants and the authority. It may entails details like the withdrawals of the participant at will even after commencement of the study. Confidentiality refers to keeping the secrecy of the information of the research and only allows a specific sect to access the information. Deception in research is applied whenever the research cannot yield the result with the use of non-deception methods. However, it should not be used in cases where the result of the project would cause emotions and distress. Debriefing entails provision into totality the details of the study (American Psychological Association, 2010). Lastly, institutional review board is entrusted with monitoring of all researches dealing with humans with the aims of protecting the welfare of the participants and also ensuring the adherence to the ethical standard.
In conclusion, the introduced and the applied principle in the field of research are appreciable and should be embraced. However, some researches like deception studies may raise concerns on ethical issues and lowers the dignity of the general principles of the psychologists’ researches.
