Recent studies have shown that women tend to be more sensitive to alcohol and drugs while also developing more severe effects than men. From metabolic processes to absorption, women experience more difficulties when physically managing the consequences of substance use (Pallatino Chang & Krans, 2019). Given that studies have shown that women develop higher drugs and alcohol levels in their systems for a long, the critical consideration that should be made is to establish whether women become more susceptible to organ failure and other drug and alcohol-related diseases. For example, it is common knowledge that excessive alcohol use leads to liver damage or liver cirrhosis in men. Future studies should seek to establish whether such conditions begin earlier in women who consume less alcohol within a shorter period than men.
According to scientists studying drugs and substance abuse, women who consume alcohol and drugs tend to develop various distortions of their menstrual cycle, hormones, and fertility issues (Evans & Sullivan, 2016). Moreover, women also respond to alcohol and drug use differently from men, as some have reported developing craving that often relapse after undergoing treatment (Evans & Sullivan, 2016). As such, future studies should seek to establish whether alcohol and substance abuse in women leads to addictions faster than in men.
Finally, some studies have shown that when pregnant women suddenly stop using alcohol and drugs without seeking medical help, the fetus can be at risk (Brandt, Moser and Fischer, 2019). Brandt, Moser, and Fischer (2019) established that babies would require to be treated for withdrawal symptoms in some cases. Future research should develop better strategies to help pregnant mothers quit alcohol and drug use without endangering their fetuses.
