Visitor Behavior and Management
Introduction
Tourists are motivated by a vast array of factors to engage in the relevant traveling activities. These factors may range from interpersonal, cultural, physical, and prestige motivators that promote a sense of social interaction as well as self-fulfillment. Moreover, the motivating factors also promote relaxation and togetherness by increasing their measure of embracing diversity from the different cultures around the globe as well as increasing their appreciation of nature. One of the most intriguing tourist destinations is Goa in India. The state is located along coastlines that stretch along the Arabian Sea. Precisely, the state is renowned for its vast beaches that stretch at Palolem and Baga to other areas that are in-land fishing points such as the village of Agonda (Pawaskar & Goel, 2014). Most of the tourists arrive in Goa during the monsoon and summer seasons. The significant tourist attraction aspect of Goa is its places of worship some of which have been preserved since the 17th century following the colonization by the Portuguese.
The influence of over 450 years of both Latin and Portuguese cultures in this region provides major tourist attraction sites. Such as Fort Aguada which is a heritage museum and the Bom Jesus Basilica that also provides a wax museum for the Indian culture. Other than the availability of museums and heritage homes, Goa also boasts of its wildlife that promote its rich bio-diversity. There exists the Mollem National Park, Mhadei Wildlife sanctuary, Bondla Wildlife sanctuary, and the Netravali wildlife sanctuary that hoists a vast array of rare animal species. These species include the mynas, kingfishers, wild boars, migratory birds, and parrots, among others. Based on the aspect of administration, the state’s tourism sector is governed by the Ministry of Tourism headed by Dilip Parulekar as well as Matthew Samuel who is the director and secretary of tourism.
The other stakeholders involved in the tourism sector of Goa are; the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) and the tourism development corporation, which is relatively a government undertaking in Goa. As for the face of tourism within the region, the appointed person is Prachi Desai. Moreover, the tourism commercial activities within the region are managed and controlled by the Goa Tourism Development Corporation Limited (GTDC). These activities include sightseeing river cruises as well as tours and the management of 12 hotels. Such activities are organized by the government with the minister of India taking an active role in the provision of a world-class tour for the incoming tourists. As a result, the government is in a position to boost and foster its tourism activities within the state of Goa. On the other hand, the public also makes up the actively involved stakeholders as they are bound to participate in the increased development of tourism activities within the region. In this regard, they can contribute significantly to the increased rate of interior tourism thereby boosting the local economy. The other involved stakeholders are the foreign tourists who bring money into the locality by boosting the economy through tourism and other affiliated activities such as investments made in businesses and other money-generating ventures.
Findings
Motives for Tourist Visitations in Goa
Goa is arguably one of the most lucrative places for tourists to visit. There are numerous reasons that make the place a good tourist attraction site. One of the major motives for tourists to visit this destination is the participation in summer festivals that happen all year-round. During the months of summer, the state throbs with liveness and high spirits that provide a conducive environment for the people who are adventurous and love having fun. Some of the best festivals include the Grape Escapade that happens during the month of April and is a wine festival and the Shigmo that occurs in March that entails folk performances through street festivals that are geared towards portraying the Goan lifestyle. Other festivals are the Indian Bike Week, the Konkan Fruit Festival both of which are held in April of every year. As such, people who like bike riding, foodies, and party animals are all included in the festivals held within the region.
The other tourist motive for visiting Goa is conducive natural environment that the city has to offer. On this note, Goa provides numerous beaches and places where people who enjoy serenity and tranquility can be accommodated to their satisfaction. The sunset cruise that is often held along the Mandovi River is one of the places that offers such conditions to the tourists (Jaswal, 2014). Other than that, the beaches are quiet and beautiful where tourists can bask in the sun enjoying their time while in the state. The third motive for tourists’ visitations to Goa is the fair prices offered. The Goan resorts and hotels cut their prices especially during summer while ensuring to maintain the quality of the services offered. The flights are also made cheap, thereby accommodating all sorts of tourists from diverse socioeconomic statuses.
Factors that may Impact the Success of Goa in Attracting Tourists in the Long-Term
There are numerous factors that could impact the success of Goa in maintaining the required level of sustainability as well as relevance that is crucial to its success in the long-term. These factors range from the ethical, political, cultural, and environmental ones. As for the economic aspect, the rise in the cost of living could negatively impact the region’s tourism success over the long haul. Other adverse economic consequences include; the increased outflows of foreign exchange, leakages in income, wasteful use of resources, and benefit to non-locals (Diniz, Fallerio & De Barros, 2014). As the tourists who wield the money embark on dictating the market, the locals and the government could suffer a hike in the prices of land and other facilities while the rate of employment is transformed into one that has a majority of locals in the lower rung jobs.
There are some socio-cultural implications of tourism within the region that could also affect its success in future. Among these factors are; the transformation in local languages, dilution of cultures, imitation of foreign lifestyles, gambling addictions and alcoholism, loss of identity, unhealthy competition, and pedophilia. Within the locals, there has been an increased level of estrangements that has been brought about by tourism. Particularly, the grooming styles and consumption behavior have significantly transformed over time. Besides, Goa has been portrayed as the place where there is readily available and cheap drugs and sex which tarnishes the name of the state and could have adverse effects in future.
Competitor Analysis
The main competitor for Goa in terms of tourism is Kerala. The region is rapidly growing in popularity, which has been influenced by the predominant catchy slogan. The other strength associated with this tourist destination is that it has recently focused on increasing and enhancing its digital marketing measures and platforms by incorporating the advanced technology. Besides, the destination also uses the media in a significant way to promote its brand while increasing awareness to people from vast demographic regions. Nonetheless, the Kerala tourist destination is faced by the weakness of overreliance on taglines for its presentation and appeal. This is despite the use of competent advertising measures that have marred the brand recall. The other major weakness is the inefficiency in increasing its popularity across other regions outside India. As a result, there are limited international tourists that visit the region.
Recommendations
Tourism within the state of Goa has been a major economic hub. As such, it is upon the involved stakeholders to ensure they harness its multiplier as well as direct effects to eradicate poverty through the provision of employment in a way that promotes environmental sustainability. Since Goa has the ability to manage a significant number of tourists at once, the state could embark on increased investments and more focused planning measures that would facilitate the improvement of roads, hotel rooms, and manage the effective treatment of waste. The government is obliged to ensure that it implements effective measures that would protect the future of its tourism industry based on maintaining and retaining the benefits. This would promote the increased growth and development within the region as well as the supplementation of other sector’s growth through the tourism one.
On the other hand, the government is obliged to promote community-based tourism activities that are equitable and sustainable for the growth and development of the region’s tourism activities. The stakeholders also need to implement a comprehensive code of tourism that encourages responsibility and upholding the systems in place, thereby mitigating the adverse environmental effects as well as generating greater economic benefits. Other recommendations include; putting a selective cap on the tourism activities from foreigners, adopting realistic plans, promoting heritage tourism, involving the local community, and providing basic infrastructure.
Conclusion
Goa, as a tourist destination, is a place that is characterized with a vast array of natural amenities as well as the artificial ones. The region’s rich culture is relatively lucrative as it offers its visitors’ the sense of diversity and togetherness. Furthermore, the state offers virtual connectivity and is an emerging hub for knowledge-based industries. Nonetheless, the success of sustainable tourism research essay writing within the region cannot continue to be treated along the lines of tourism as only a commodity. While in the short-term the artificial stances Help in the generation of revenue, the same is not bound to work in the long-term considering that other destinations compete for the same footfalls of the tourists. As such, the service providers within the region have to offer the real Goa experience thereby maintaining the quality of numbers associated with tourism and not just the numbers themselves.
