Nurses on Wheels Assignment

NURSES ON WHEELS

Nurses on Wheels
The world population keeps on growing as years go by. As the global population increases so does the problems associated with it increase for the various countries. Of great concern is the increased demand for medical attention. This increased demand for health services means increased need for nurses and health facilities in general. The most needy people would be the homeless as most of them either have less income to help them get medical attention from the expensive facilities. It therefore calls for policies and other improvements to help make health services accessible especially to the needy homeless.
In order to address the decreasing number of health workers (nurses) that is caused by increased populations that need such services, there has to be a proper means of mitigating the huge gap that is on the upward trend. One of the ways to meet the deficit for nurses is through making the shortage known to the general public and the government at large. By sharing with the public, more students would be interested in studying the course and also the government would find ways to attract more young people into the field to address the shortage at a future time.
Project Description
These days most people are using social platforms such as twitter and facebook. It would be therefore easy to use such media to reach out to those interested in studying nursing so that intakes could be increased. Through such media also, the future impacts of less nurses could be explained hence help reach many who have the desire to help humanity through nursing. To add on the above, by engaging more and more people through social media, information such as high nursing college fees may be obtained and campaigns targeted at making the government reduce college fees would be initiated hence the governments attention would have been gained. From that, also, the government would see the need to increase the number of nurses so that it would have as many nurses as possible to effectively serve hospitals and attend to specific facilities housing the homeless.
The use of direct personnel to reach out to has proved to be effective as these personnel can walk and travel to the very place where these homeless people reside SAMHSA (2003). Further, because of the available care homes in some areas, the homeless would be effectively reached by the dispatched nurses. This would be made much easier with the provision of housing to the homeless which has proved to be another way of ensuring the homeless are easily reached. Community health personnel would be able to visit the housing areas and relay the necessary information hence promote health. On the contrary, bad housing policies have been noted to be the main causes of the rise in rampant health menace (SAMHSA (2003).
Research reveals that by providing housing to people who have been rendered homeless or who are on the verge of becoming homeless, such people would be less prone to mental health problems (SAMHSA, 2016). These shelters would either be provided on the basis of emergency and later on by providing permanent housing for supportive purposes. By doing the preceding, the strategy used has helped stabilise peoples’ lives hence improve outcome for the homeless people.
Significance/Background
While contemplating the best ways to promote access to health care by the homeless, outreach plans have been considered the best to achieve the objectives. It has been recognised that by directly reaching out to the homeless, it would help maximise the effectiveness and efficiency of the services offered to the homeless communities. Further, by providing both short term and long-term housing facilities it has been noted to help stabilise people’s lives hence improving the outcome. Therefore, although it may require much resources, the increase in nurses coupled with provision of temporary and ultimately permanent housing facilities to the victims of for instance economic shock, it would reduce the number of both homeless people and the health problems associated with (National Coalition For The Homeless, 2009).
With the increasing population of the world every day, there would be definitely an increased demand for nurses worldwide and in this country as well. For instance, it has been projected that America would be facing a nurses crisis very soon unless the young population is given motivation to go for the course (Ledbetter, 2015). With majority of the registered nurses being retained by the hospitals, the remaining lot of nurses would be distributed according to the regions offering temporary and permanent housing facilities. Therefore, it would be necessary to create these housing facilities to function as posting stations for the nurses and also accommodate the homeless thus reducing health issues associated with homelessness.
The quest for increased number of nurses to take care of the increasing number of homeless people and related health issues has made some states such as Florida to come up with measures to address the future needs (Florida Centre of Nursing, 2010). To add on that, laws have been made to address the future need for nurses (Florida Legislature, 2015) and all these are channelled towards promotion of and access to healthcare especially for the homeless.
Rationale for the project
There is no doubt that less nurses means less people get medical attention. Similarly, with less people trained to deal with health issues associated with homelessness, the problems would still haunt us to death as nurses are scarcely distributed (Jimenez, 2016). It is therefore necessary to strive to increase first the number of nurses to attend to the homeless and secondly to increase the number of housing facilities so that majority if not all of the homeless people would be given a stable place to rest their shocked mind. It is also evident that by increasing the nurses and other “messengers” it would help reach as many homeless people as possible hence reduce problems associated with homelessness thus achieving maximum results (NHCHC, 2003)..
Project objectives
The following are some of the objectives of this paper:
• The project would serve the purpose of creating awareness to the public so as to sensitise the public on the need for more student enrolment into nursing colleges.
• The project would also help stake holders in the health sector play an active role in the increment of the nurses in the country.
• Through the project, the government would also see the need to provide manageable fees programs for the nursing students.
• The project would raise the need to have more nurses so that as some would be attending to patients in hospitals, some would also be sent to homeless people tp provide the same services.
• By engaging both the target and non-target audiences, the project would bring both the students and possible financiers so that those unable to raise college fees would be helped to afford such education.
Conclusion
There is no doubt we need extra numbers of nurses to meet the growing numbers of health services dependency especially to the homeless. Therefore, by creating awareness of the need for more nurses, students from all-over the country would be motivated to enrol for nursing courses and also, the government would see it necessary to lower fees that in most cases have barred many from attending college. Further, the projects’ desire to attract a large number of people to become nurses, would be realised when well-wishers and donors come in and sponsor the needy students to enrol into nursing courses hence the achievement of the ultimate goal, more and more nurses thus their accessibility and mobility countrywide.
