Experiential Learning (Kolb)

David A. Kolb’s experiential learning theory is a cyclical model of learning that combines experience, perception, cognition, and behavior. It builds upon the work of John Dewey and Kurt Levin and posits that knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. The Four Stages of Learning

Concrete Experience (CE)

The Four Learning Styles
Kolb’s theory also identifies four learning styles, each of which corresponds to one of the four stages of learning. These styles are:

Assimilators
Assimilators learn better when presented with sound logical theories to consider. They excel at abstract conceptualization and reflective observation.

Convergers
Convergers learn better when provided with practical applications of concepts and theories. They excel at active experimentation and abstract conceptualization.

Accommodators
Accommodators learn better when provided with “hands-on” experiences. They excel at concrete experience and active experimentation.

Divergers
Divergers learn better when allowed to observe and collect a wide range of information. They excel at concrete experience and reflective observation.

Kolb’s experiential learning theory provides a comprehensive framework for understanding how people learn through experience.
