Idiopathic is a term meaning ‘of unknown cause’; hence idiopathic diseases are those illnesses that medical practitioners have not yet discovered their origin. From a Greek text, idiopathy comes from two words, ‘idios’ meaning one’s own and ‘pathos’ meaning suffering; hence idiopathy diseases are illnesses of their kind (Hinks, Bowes, Cobb, Ainsworth, Marion, Comeau & Thomson, 2017). There are other cases where medical practitioners can determine the cause of an illness in a patient; still, in other patients, the practitioners may not determine the causes of the same illness. Therefore, in such cases, the origin of such illnesses can be termed as idiopathic. An excellent example of an idiopathic disease is the Leg-Calve-Perthes illness which is an infection to the knee.
In terms of etiology, the leading cause of Leg-Calve-Perthes illness remains unknown, but several risk factors can contribute to the development of Leg-Calve-Perthes illness. One of the risk factors that can cause Leg-Calve-Perthes illness is genetic influence (Pavone, Chisari, Vescio, Lizzio, Sess & Testa, 2019). Leg-Calve-Perthes illness can occur to a person through inheritance from a family member. In such a case, one inherits the disorder at a younger age, where the disorder develops slowly without the patient realizing it. Another risk factor that can lead to Leg-Calve-Perthes illness is gender variations in terms of physical characteristics. Men have a higher likeliness to develop Leg-Calve-Perthes illness compared to women.
One of the signs and symptoms of Leg-Calve-Perthes disorder is developing a limp either on the groin, thigh, or knee pain. Another common sign is that the patients start to limp due to the unstable knee (Pavone, Chisari, Vescio, Lizzio, Sess & Testa, 2019). Another sign from Leg-Calve-Perthes illness is the patient can not move the hip joint efficiently. Another symptom is that a patient with Leg-Calve-Perthes illness starts to experience muscle spasms and also atrophy in the muscles.
However, there are treatment options medical practitioners can offer to a patient suffering from Leg-Calve-Perthes illness. One treatment option is offering Leg-Calve-Perthes disorder patients with anti-inflammatory drugs (Pavone, Chisari, Vescio, Lizzio, Sess & Testa, 2019). Another possible treatment for Leg-Calve-Perthes illness is the non-weight -bearing measures where the patient minimizes the weight on the leg’s infected part. Another treatment for the Leg-Calve-Perthes illness is bracing the knees, which protects the knees from external damage. One informative piece of information that I would like to share concerning Leg-Calve-Perthes illness is that the best way to prevent the illness is healthy living. Healthy living ranges from the foods one consumes to the physical exercises one engages in regularly.
