The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) face massive discrimination due to their sexual orientation and gender. They are not only stigmatized by workmates but also extended families and society. They are vulnerable to verbal and even physical attacks. The European Union spearheads the fight against discrimination of LGBT.
The international law states that people should be treated equally regardless of their sexual orientation and gender. A survey conducted in the European Union member states revealed that LGBT faces several challenges. They are discriminated against in social and economic life, vulnerable to attacks and are always afraid of speaking up to avoid visibility and discrimination.
The European Union advocates for nations and societies to support LGBT people. Several functions are held every year to educate and inform societies about their rights. According to the European Union, failure to support LGBT families can lead to an increase in the spread of HIV infection, discrimination and exclusion of LGBT in social activities and economic growth.
Several organizations together with the European Union campaign against discrimination and unfair treatment of LGBT. For example, the five-day pride festival held in Belgium was hosted by trade unionists, the confederation of Christian unions and European trade union and confederation. 60 more delegates also participated in the campaign that advocated for the fair treatment of LGBT people in society.
The European Union urges the government, trade unions, private sector, and the media to sensitize people about the rights of the LGBT. A survey conducted in European member states revealed that people are not aware of the rights of LGBT and there is a need for more campaigns. The European Union distributed leaflets translated into 22 different languages in an attempt to inform people about equal rights for LGBT families.
It vehemently condemned stickers published by Gazeta Polska weekly paper that put on a black cross over the LGBT rainbow symbol. According to the union, this is a sign of discrimination. European Union is also helping in the fight for equal rights of lesbians in Munich Germany. They face more discrimination particularly in workplaces more than their male counterparts.
Lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender face a lot of discrimination in society. They are not only humiliated but also physically and verbally attacked. The international law state that people should be treated equally regardless of their gender and sexual orientation. The European Union has been actively engaging in defending and informing people about the rights of the LGBT.
