Sports Trauma and its Peculiarities
Sports trauma or injuries occur when a person is engaging in an exercise or a sport. They often result from acute or repetitive athletic activities and can affect bones or tissues such as muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Sports injuries are mainly caused by poor training practices, improper sports gear, and inappropriate training techniques. Not conditioning before engaging in a sport can result in abrupt stretching of tissues, which can cause injuries.
Sports injuries can either be acute or chronic. Acute sports injuries occur when there is a sudden strain or tension on a muscle or joint. For instance, a sprained ankle that results from a miscalculated landing is considered an acute injury. Chronic injuries, on the other hand, occur over an extended period due to repetitive overuse of muscles. Chronic injuries are mostly caused by poor training practices and physical abnormalities.
The most common types of sports injuries include:
• Sprained ankle. Characterized by sharp pain, swelling, and stiffness in the ankle region.
• Fractures or broken bones.
• Dislocations. They occur when a bone is forced out of its socket.
• Concussion or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). A concussion may be associated with severe headache, dizziness, confusion, nausea, and blurred speech.
• Strains. Occurs due to overstretching of muscles and tendons.
• Nose injuries. A direct blow to the nose may result in a broken nose or nose bleed.
• Dental damage. A blow to the jaw may result in a broken or dislodged tooth.
• A groin pull/strain. Symptoms include pain, tenderness, or bruising in the groin region.
Risk Factors
Anybody can develop a sports injury. However, people who are actively involved in sports are more likely to suffer a sports injury. Professional dancers are also considered as athletes and are also at a higher risk of suffering sports injuries. Also, workers who are involved in high-intensity activities have been found to develop different types of sports injuries. For example, factory workers and those in the construction industries often develop tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow even when they have never played tennis or golf.
Prevention and Treatment
Prevention options include the use of proper techniques, using appropriate equipment, and doing enough warm-up before engaging in any sports activities. In case of an injury, the first step is to stop playing. “Working through the pain” is more likely to cause more harm than good. Treatment of sports injuries often follows RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and elevation), which focuses on relieving the pain, reducing swelling, and hastening the healing process. Treatment may also involve the use of pain medications, restrictive movement of the injured region, rehabilitation, and sometimes surgery in severe cases.
