Climate change can also affect the decision to stay or move, as well as the destination and duration of migration.

However, the relationship between climate change and migration is complex and multidimensional. Not all people exposed to climate change hazards will migrate, and not all migrants are driven by climate change. Migration is influenced by a variety of factors, such as socio-economic conditions, political stability, demographic trends, cultural norms, and personal aspirations. Moreover, migration can be a form of adaptation to climate change, as people seek to diversify their income sources, reduce their vulnerability, or access better opportunities elsewhere. Migration can also have positive or negative effects on the environment and on the resilience of both origin and destination communities.

Therefore, it is important to investigate the link between climate change and migration from a holistic and interdisciplinary perspective, taking into account the multiple drivers, dimensions, and impacts of environmentally induced migration. It is also essential to address the legal and policy challenges and responses to this phenomenon, especially in terms of protecting the rights and dignity of migrants, enhancing their access to resources and services, and ensuring their participation and integration in their new environments.

This paper aims to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on climate change and migration, as well as some recommendations for future research and action. The paper is structured as follows:

– Section 1 introduces the main concepts and definitions related to climate change and migration, as well as the main sources of data and evidence on this topic.
– Section 2 analyses the main drivers and patterns of climate change-induced migration, both within and across regions, with a focus on vulnerable populations such as women, children, indigenous peoples, and small island states.
– Section 3 examines the main impacts and implications of climate change-induced migration for human development, human security, human rights, and environmental sustainability.
– Section 4 reviews the existing legal and policy frameworks and instruments at the global, regional, national, and local levels that address or relate to climate change-induced migration, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.
– Section 5 concludes with some suggestions for future research directions and policy recommendations to enhance the understanding and management of climate change-induced migration.
