Fingerprints are considered the most common type of physical evidence that is very valuable in indicating that a particular person was at the crime scene during the time of the crime. They are typically compared to the files in local, state and FBI files. The general rule in using fingerprints as evidence is that the prosecution should produce them through an expert witness that will demonstrate its chain of custody that will prove the authenticity, genuine and lack of any form of tampering on them. The fingerprint experts are required to confirm that the used procedures were reliable, and test results have a high accuracy probability. To corroborate this information, the evidence needs to have more proof to indicate that they write collected at the crime scene.
It is prudent to ensure that the fingerprints taken from the crime scene were actually left at the scene when the crime was committed. To ascertain this critical fact, various ways are incorporated, including using the victim’s testimony that the defendant did touch or handle a particular object which had his fingerprints at the crime scene. Other evidence for tracing fingerprints include the testimony that the specific surface had been washed or cleaned just before the crime happened, the fingerprints were located at an area which the defendants does not have authorized access to get into, or the fingerprints were found in a victim’s blood smear.
A comparison of fingerprints and bite mark evidence to the shoe prints and tire trucks would indicate a similarity that they are all a form of impression evidence. Impression evidence is created through two objects coming into contact with enough force to cause an impression (Fuller, 2008). The difference between them is that the fingerprints and bite marks have a higher probability of pointing out an individual was at the crime scene science. They are body parts that cannot be changed easily. For the shoe prints and tire trucks, more evidence is required to prove that the suspect was at the crime scene considering shoe prints and tire trucks can be similar across different individuals and trucks.
Palm prints are the line patterns located in an area of the palm which is also distinguishable from other features due to several attributes. The attributes include the colour, clarity, continuity, length and variation in thickness (Bala, 2016). A proper analysis of the line patterns is necessary, especially in shape representation. The lines are represented efficiently, and it requires minimal storage and consistency in terms of detecting. Notably, for effectiveness, the palm prints need to demonstrate occupying a larger area of the palmar surface to allow the obtaining of minutiae details. Palm prints will contain identical features such as the primary palmar flexion creases, tri-radius, phalanges are among others that are unique and stable (Chauhan, 2017). The palm print is hence required to occupy a larger surface for the analyst to collect it entirely and found it easy to compare it with the database of prints using the identifiable patterns on the print.
