How to Approach a Case

1. Study the situation • Describe the problem, decision or Assessment you are facing in the

case

2. Develop hypotheses • Propose causes underlying the situation

3. Analyze and identify options • Extract and analyze data in the case; identify possible options

4. Evaluate • Which option, action or explanation is the best

• Identify possible weaknesses in your recommendation and how

to mitigate

Writing and Presenting a Case

1. State the Conclusion First • Briefly state your assessment and the critical few supporting

reasons

2. Make the Case • Present the options that were considered

• List decision criteria used to evaluate options

• Apply the criteria to analyze each option

3. Recommendation and Action Plan • State your recommendation

• Outline the corresponding action plan for what should be done in

short, medium and long term

• List any potential risks of your recommendation and how the risks

might be mitigated
