Turn The Ship Around essay

The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate the application of various leadership models and approaches, specifically the path-goal theory and the situational approach to leadership, in extreme circumstances. Review the Turn the Ship Around! (A) case. As a leader, you will be faced with responding immediately to solve issues. The Turn the Ship Around! (A)case is an example of leadership under extreme circumstances. Reflect on this example to shape how you might apply the goal-path theory and the situational leadership approach in an everyday, real-world situation.

Write a 500-750-word paper that analyzes the events outlined in the case by addressing the following questions and concepts. Be sure to support your rationale by providing specific examples. You are required to include three to five additional references to support your position.

1. Discuss how the leaders demonstrate flexibility and adaptability.

The first CO did not show any flexibility or adaptability. It was literally his way. Paleaz demonstrated flexibility in many ways. He allowed David to lead and take charge. He was open to seeing what ideas David had and allowed David to have the freedom to explore other opportunities. Flexible leaders embrace change, are open to new ideas and enjoy working with a wide spectrum of people (cite). Pelaez demonstrated adaptability because he allowed David to share his approaches and opinions. David loved the experience that Pelaez provided. He allowed his team to test and explore their sonar equipment. Adaptive Leaders ask others their opinions, perspectives, and approaches. Everyone does things a bit differently, and potential answers and solutions to problems can be hidden in the way other people think (cite). David demonstrated flexibility and adaptability in the same way he taught by Pelaez. He gave more decision-making power to his team members and just supervise their actions.

2. Describe how the leaders apply aspects of the path-goal theory to this situation.

During David’s first assignment as a junior officer his First CO practiced the traditional leader- follower model, he gave orders and expected the crew to execute them. His first leader showed directive leadership in the path-goal theory leadership styles. Directive leader sets clear standard of performance and makes the rules and regulations clear to followers (Northouse, 2019). He also showed Achievement- oriented leadership. He challenged his followers to perform work at the highest level possible and was successful. Then Marc Pelaez became the new CO and his leadership style was totally different from the pervious CO. Pelaez practice supportive and participative leadership. Pelaez encourages initiative from the crew and was open to their suggestions which was supportive leadership. Pelaez allowed David to step up and perform a task after he overheard of conversation David was having. Pelaez allowed David to make decisions and allowed David to explore new opportunities and gave him greater flexibility which Pelaez demonstrated participative leadership. David leadership style was empowering his mean to make decisions regarding their tasks rather than just follow orders. David practiced both supportive and participative leadership. During his new role as engineer office things did not go as expected. There was a lot of sloppy work done. I believe David should’ve incorporated Achievement- oriented leadership while using the supportive and participative leadership style.

3. Discuss the leader’s ability to communicate effectively with all of the stakeholders involved and how communication could have been improved.

The first CO David was under I believe did a good at directing and leading the crew to accomplish goals. He was a technical expert who led the crew through highly successful developments. Communication was clear for setting goals and getting task done. However, there could’ve been more supportive leadership demonstrated. Pelaez communicated effectively with everyone out of all three of the leaders. When he overheard David asking for more responsibilities he instantly spoke up and asked, “Why don’t you ask”. Pelaez did a good job at emerging David to become a leader but he could’ve also showed him other ways to be successful if something doesn’t go as planned. Lastly, David was a good leader he communicated effectively. However, when things hit the fan, he reverted back to barking orders instead of sticking to his empowerment approach,

4. Explain how well the leaders follow the situational approach to leadership.

The fist CO showed high- directive- slow supportive style which is called a directing style. The leader focused more on communicating the goal achievement and spends a smaller amount of time using supportive behaviors. The second CO Pelaez demonstrated the coaching approach. The coaching approach is high directive and high supportive. In this approach the leader focuses communication on both achieving goals and meeting follower socioemotional needs. Pelaez involved himself by giving encouragement to David to take initiative on other task and David David’s input. David demonstrated a supportive approach. In this approach the leader does not focus on goals but uses supportive behaviors that bring out follower’s skills around the goal to be accomplished. This particular approached backfired on David because a lot of his followers weren’t completing the task full out. David focused too much time on supporting this task and less time on completing the goal.

5. Describe how this case might shape how you apply the goal-path theory and the situational approach in a real-world situation.

I believe all four of the goal- path leadership styles should be used. Being directive, supportive, participative and achievement oriented to me is an effective leader. Implementing all four styles is very important. The situational approach is still tricky to me. The only approach I see that maybe effective is the coaching style. All the other approaches seem to be missing a piece of the coaching style, but the coaching style is all in one. Being able to direct and be supportive is very important.
