CHCCCS020 – RESPOND EFFECTIVELY TO BEHAVIOURS OF CONCERN
Summative assessment 2 (0% completed)
Project 1
You work as a support worker for an organisation that supports clients with disabilities to remain in their own homes.
You have recently been assigned to work with Jack, a 24-year-old male client with an intellectual disability. Jack has a history of outbursts of anger and aggression. He lives with his elderly parents and you have been asked to Help Jack with showering and dressing, and to accompany him on weekly outings.
Respond to each of the questions with 50–150 words for each.
1. You need to plan possible responses to Jack’s potential behaviours of concern. How could you do this and how could you maximise the availability of legitimate sources of support (including, possibly, other staff members or support personnel), and resources?
2. How might you plan responses giving priority to the safety of self and others?
3. On your second outing with Jack, you take him to a café for lunch. There are about 12 customers in the café, either eating or waiting for their food to be served. Jack has been placed on a strict diet by his doctor; he is not allowed to have sweet food. Jack understands this restriction, but when another customer is served ice-cream, he demands to have some too. When you explain that he cannot, he stands up yelling at you, and picks up his chair, threatening to throw it at the counter if you do not let him have the ice-cream.
How might you respond to this situation, given that the organisation you work for does not allow any physical intervention?
4. Report the incident as you imagine it might have unfolded, using an ABC format.
5. The review of other ABC forms indicates a pattern where Jack’s anger is always triggered by seeing someone else having something he wants but cannot have (especially food). What suggestions might you offer with regard to management of this behaviour in the future?
6. What is debriefing? Describe two examples of how debriefing might Help you after an incident like the one described.
