Mr. Sparrow is a widowed 84-year-old male who is the primary caregiver of his 43-ycar-old son with Down syndrome. They live in Houston, TX. Mr. Sparrow is legally blind, suffers from mild emphysema, and has a heart condition. His son, John, has arthritis and has been diagnosed with depression that began shortly after his mother’s death 20 months ago. There are two grown daughters who live in the county, but both work and have families of their own. Each daughter takes turns checking on father and brother, running errands and getting them to the family physician and respective specialists as needed. John attends a day care program for the developmentally challenged five clays a week.
Mr. Sparrow does his best to take care of his own and John’s needs but regularly burns meals, mixes up medicines, and struggles to help John understand the death of his mother. Mr. Sparrow has filed for state Helpance, but has been on a waiting list for the past nine months. Although he has a moderate retirement income in addition to Social Security, he cannot afford the $40,000 annual cost of moving John to a group home.
