“A Wreath for Emmett Till is a sophisticated and thought-provoking poem written by Connecticut’s poet laureate and award-winning poet Marilyn Nelson. This book combines emotion, history, and social commentary to bring the life and death of Emmett Louis Till back to our nation’s consciousness. Emmett Till was a fourteen-year-old African American boy murdered in 1955 in Mississippi for allegedly whistling at or speaking to a white woman. Though two men were tried for the crime, they were acquitted; no one has been convicted for Emmett’s murder. In 2004 the U.S. Justice Department reopened the case based on new evidence brought to light by two documentary films.

With beautiful language that turns chilling at times, Nelson asks readers to face the atrocity of lynching and its role in our nation’s history. Her poem calls readers to bear witness and speak out against such hatred and violence. For this lab assignment you will choose one topic and conduct a bit of research in preparation for reading and discussing Marilyn Nelson’s A Wreath for Emmett Till:

Research and read about your topic using scholarly and popular sources and write a response paper that includes a bibliography of 3-5 sources found in your research that aided in your understanding and awareness about your topic. Your research should reflect a deep engagement with the text that leads you beyond a basic definition or understanding. Probe the issue, dig into the nuances of the situation, work to find answers to questions that might arise for you during this process. For example, if you’re researching lynching, you might also dig into reported cases, shifting definitions, how people have protested, resisted, and informed others across centuries.

Be curious. Explore. Investigate. Dare to learn more about the very things you may not want to confront. Be courageous. If, as Butler reminds us, we need to bear witness to the past, to unfamiliar narratives that are integral to our survival, consider this another opportunity to do just that.

Your 2-pg. lab response will discuss the five most important pieces of information uncovered in your research and their significance. You will also include an MLA formatted work cited page of 4-5 sources from your research that furthered your understanding of the topic.
