The clinical situation involved conducting a psychiatric interview with a school-aged child or adolescent regarding their sexuality or gender identity. The situation occurred during my clinical rotation, and I was working with a 14-year-old patient who identified as gender-nonconforming. The patient had been experiencing distress related to their gender identity and was seeking support from mental health professionals.

During the clinical interview, I experienced some anxiety and discomfort discussing sensitive topics related to sexuality and gender identity with a young patient. I was worried about asking the wrong questions, offending the patient, or causing harm unintentionally. Additionally, I had some personal biases and prejudices related to gender norms and societal expectations, which could have influenced my approach to the interview.

To manage my anxieties and biases, I reminded myself of the importance of creating a safe and supportive space for the patient to share their experiences. I also tried to approach the interview with an open and non-judgmental attitude, recognizing that every individual has the right to express themselves in their unique way.

Before the clinical experience, I had some assumptions about people with mental illness related to their ability to cope with societal norms and expectations. However, this experience helped me realize that individuals with mental health challenges can experience unique struggles related to their identity, and they deserve our support and validation.

As an advanced nursing practitioner, this experience will impact my practice by helping me approach patients with greater sensitivity and openness towards diverse experiences and identities. It will also encourage me to seek ongoing education and training related to issues of gender identity and sexuality to better support my patients.
