As the coronavirus continues to spread across the globe, with more infections and deaths being recorded every day, nurses are in the front line of the response team managing patient screening, placement, and providing care to those in critical conditions. Nurses are working tirelessly round the clock to provide care to coronavirus patients, risking their lives and their families from infection.
In the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses are actively involved in caring for the patient’s day in and day out. Nurses are in direct contact with the patients where they can monitor their progress, establish what is working better and what is not, trying different things to provide more effective and efficient care, and even making new suggestions for improvement. Nurses are the primary and sometimes the only contact that the COVID-19 patients will have during admission. The patients rely on them for comfort, assurance and networking purposes for all their medical and non-medical needs during this trying period.
Nurses also act as mediators between patients and doctors, updating them of the progress and medical needs for patients. Because of the highly infectious nature of coronavirus, visiting restrictions has been put to all the admitted patients of COVID-19 to prevent further infections. As such, nurses remain the only link between the patients, and their families, acting as a bridge between them and other parties from outside.
Nurses are also playing a vital role in managing the COVID-19 pandemic crisis since they are practically the only link between the patients and the outside healthcare team. They are in contact with patients through the entire shift where they interact with them, assess, and record even the most subtle changes that can indicate whether they are improving or deteriorating. They are also able to administer treatments and establish the patient’s responses towards them. Nurses are also able to assess whether a patient is in desperate need of respiratory therapy and relay such information to physicians.
The response and the instrumental role of nurses in managing the COVID-19 crisis have put nursing in a global spotlight with the World Health Organization (WHO) declaring 2020 as “the year of nurse and midwife” in honour of Florence Nightingale, a modern nursing founder. As we continue to battle the coronavirus pandemic, nurses remain the most pivotal assets. The contribution of nurses in crisis mitigation dates back to the days of Nightingale, and they will continue being at the forefront during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
