Potential vs. Kinetic Energy
All kinds of energy are either potential or kinetic energy. Potential energy is the energy stored in an object because of its position. It is an energy form that possesses the potential to do work but is not actively doing work (Holzner, 2016). An object’s potential energy is found in its position; in other words, it is the energy of position. Examples of potential energy include a book on a shelf, water behind a dam, and a child on top of a slide. Kinetic energy is the energy that an object that is moving possesses because of its motion. When potential energy is released and spurred into motion by gravity or other catalysts, kinetic energy is created. When work is done on an object causing it to accelerate, the kinetic energy of an object increases (Holzner, 2016). When a person walks down the stairs, as water boils, and as the planets go round the sun, kinetic energy is being utilized. The most vital aspects that determine kinetic energy is the motion (measured as velocity) and the object’s mass.
The major dissimilarity between potential and kinetic energy is that the former is stationary, with stored energy that can be released while the latter is the energy in motion, actively utilizing energy for movement. Another difference pertains to velocity. This measurement is the foundation of kinetic energy, but has no relationship with potential energy. Actually, velocity is the most essential part of the equation when ascertaining the quantity of kinetic energy of any particular object, and in the potential energy equation, it is nonexistent (Holzner, 2016). Despite their differences, potential and kinetic energy complement each other. Upon its release, potential energy always turns into kinetic energy, and kinetic energy is necessary to make it possible for energy to be stored in an object as potential, in one manner or another.
