Positive and Negative Impacts of Postmodernism Philosophy
Postmodernism is a late 20th-century philosophical movement dominated by general suspicion and attitudes that oppose any attempts to explain reality. Postmodernism succeeded modernism, another philosophical movement dominated by major cultural changes. Generally, postmodernism is the criticism of long-held values and beliefs of modernism and all typically accepted narratives. Postmodernism is based on the idea that the truth is not merely reflected in human understanding, but rather it is constructed by the human brain as it seeks to realize its kind of personal truth. Postmodernists are, therefore, very skeptical of any explanation regarding culture, race, and traditions. Unlike modernism which is based on abstract principles, postmodernism relies on how individuals interpret the world and their own personal experience with God.
Postmodernism has both positive and negative impacts.
The positive impact is that it allows individuals and groups of people to create a relationship with God. The Mega church of Cleveland embraces postmodernism and welcomes people from all faiths, races, and all walks of life. This fosters unity in society
However, despite the impact of unifying people, postmodernism has its own share of weaknesses. One major weakness relates to the aspect of relativism. Postmodernism rejects the notion of religion or absolute truth. With postmodernism, people are kept off from knowing or accepting the actual truth., As a result, it undermines their beliefs because the real truth does not exist in their world. To them, any foreign idea and action must be accepted and respected regardless of how much it might appear different in the “normal’ world. And the idea that postmodernism promotes tolerance to everyone’s experiences then fail to accept those that do not support their movement is sheer hypocrisy.
Postmodernism alters the truth by ignoring and disregarding societal beliefs and values. This creates an unfulfilled society that does not know what to believe. Such a community faces major challenges because they do not have a “truth,” which they can appeal to when seeking an understanding of their history and culture. Discounting concrete religious and historical texts like the bible results in a society with no reliable experiences and unsupported views, which create an immense void within the society. Without objective truths, every individual is subject to their own subjective opinions, which can further present a division between different groups. There is also a major concern that postmodernism supports the violation of powers. For instance, how can we objectively criticize any human actions like slavery and involuntary female genital mutilation without any universal truth?
