Pharmacodynamics is the study of what the drug does to the body whereas pharmacokinetics is the study of what the body does to the drug. Advance in age reduces CNS function leading to an exaggerated response to CNS active drugs (Cossart et al., 2019). Reduction in liver mass and blood flow thus reducing first-pass metabolism. Aging decreases the renal elimination of drugs. Studies show that after the 40th birthday, the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decreases by 0.1 mL/sec/m 2/decade (Cossart et al., 2019). Healthcare practitioners should exercise caution while prescribing medication to elderly patients to avoid adverse effects. Medication errors occur among two-thirds of the residents in nursing homes (Cossart et al., 2019). Practitioners should consider the AGS Beers Criteria to avoid conditions that may undermine recovery. The consideration should involve appropriate dosage and medication.
Inappropriate medication can affect the patient or cause toxicity. Statistics indicate that the number of elderly patients seeking care is on the rise. Elderly patients are at risk of multiple health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular conditions, and mental health issues (Sidharta et al., 2019). Prescription of appropriate medication is effective in recovery.
