Imperialism – Proper and Legitimate Course
The term “imperialism” was used to refer to the economic, military, and cultural influence of influential empires and nations over other countries. It is the policy where more authoritative and powerful nations would extend their rule of authority by acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies. Imperialism in the United States of America happened at the turn of the 19th century, and it was used to gain an advantage over other countries by gaining more power, land, and controlling their products. Even the Christian community played a part in imperialism when the Christian missionaries set out to convert people and conquer their territory led by missionary Rev. Josiah. Strong. American imperialism can be said to have been a proper and legitimate course to follow because most of the outcomes were positive even though many people suffered significantly through the process.
Exactly when the American imperialism began is still unclear. Some historians argue that it started soon after the constitution was written. Others, like Donald W. Meinig, trace it back to the days of Louisiana’s purchase. According to Meinig, imperialism was a period characterized by aggressive invasion of territory on one people by another where the people eventually gave in to the new rules. This is typically what happened when the US conquered Native Americans, forcing them to adapt to their way of life.
The first notable impact of American imperialism happened when the US helped Cuba gain independence from Spain. After this move, America was seen as a very powerful nation yearning for more power. The country continued to exert political, economic, and social control over other countries, including the Philippines, Germany, Austria, Japan, and Korea. One notable act of imperialism by the US during this period was the annexation of Hawaii by overthrowing the Queen in 1998. This allowed the country to gain all the control over the land, ports, harbors, buildings, equipment, and all other property that was initially the possession of the Government of Hawaii Islands.
The country also purchased Alaska from Russia for 7.2 million. The conquest would later expand to other countries like Puerto Rico and Panama, and islands like Guam, a major coal depot. Gradually, the navy becomes powerful and stronger because it could now control trade and use the coal deposits do acquire products that they would have initially needed help from other countries to obtain. As we can see, imperialism in the United States was indeed a legitimate course since it helped the nation become stronger, powerful, and more independent. Through imperialism, the United States grew internationally and economically to what we see today.
