Project Proposal Assignment

Over the course of our time together, you will develop an original research project on a topic of your choosing using methods learned from class. Your topic must relate to the course theme of the 1970s. The first step of this project is the project proposal. Your goal here is:

❖ to articulate your early stage topic and anticipated research methods
❖ to designate where you anticipate drawing your archive from
❖ to share some questions you hope to answer with your work, and
❖ to determine what format you want your project to take.

Overall grading scheme (65 total points)
Project proposal form: 10 points
Annotated bibliography: 15 points
Project outline and peer feedback assignment: 10 points
Final project: 30 points

Strong proposals will:
● Demonstrate creativity in topic choice and research questions.
● Reflect engagement with methods laid out in the methods section of the syllabus
● Designate a clear archive of materials. (This does not have to be an institutional archive but you need to show that you’ve given some thought to where you will need to look to answer your questions.)
● Explain how the format of your project enables you to best share the results of your research as it relates to answering your research questions.

Keep in mind that your final project should take the form of a 8-10 page research paper or an equivalent amount of work for another format. If you choose an alternative format, you should spell out your rationale in this proposal.

About a paragraph. What format will your project take (paper, website, podcast, video, art installation, performance piece, etc.)? How does this format enable you to effectively communicate the research you hope to do?
