Research
The selected research topic is on the importance of functions of the integumentary system. The integumentary system comprises nails, hair, epidermis, dermis, hypodermis, and associated glands (Torrison & Cameron, 2019). The different parts of the system play vital roles including regulating body temperature, synthesis of Vitamin D, detection of stimuli, and cell fluid maintenance. Different roles are essential in the body since they protect the vital organs, regulate body temperature, and synthesize vitamin D. For instance, thermoregulation is vital since human beings live in environments with varying temperatures (Torrison & Cameron, 2019). Synthesis of Vitamin D improves absorption of calcium and phosphorous. The vitamin improves the formation and strength of the bones (Veltri et al., 2018). For instance, people who are exposed to the sun gain vitamin D which is critical in the formation of strong teeth and bones.
Critical Thinking
The integumentary system is critical for the functioning of the body. It helps young children to develop and adapt to the environment. For instance, parents expose young children to the morning sun to enhance bone development and strength. Babies who go for days in their formative age without appropriate exposure to the sun are at risk of developing bone problems. Elderly people should receive optimal exposure to the sun to avoid weak bones that can increase the risk of fracture.
Connecting the Dots
The topic is important for the community since it can address diverse issues that affect the health of young and elderly people. For instance, the community should learn that exposure to the sun will prevent bone problems. Another reason the topic is important is that the knowledge will help the community will learn the importance of the system in thermoregulation. At a time, the world is experiencing weather changes, the knowledge will improve preparedness to avoid adverse outcomes such as dehydration.
