Human Resource Professional Certification Preparation
Human Resource professionals recognize that success in the field is based on several factors including
certification, access to research and legal and regulatory updates, and networking. Today, several
organizations, including SHRM, HRCI, and others, provide a variety of certification examinations, covering a
variety of topics in the HR realm.
For example, the SHRM-CP examination focuses on HR policy design and implementation and includes both
basic knowledge questions and situational questions. The SHRM-SCP examination focuses on strategic
applications of HR best practices and long-term HR management systems.
Additionally, the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI) offers several HR certifications including:
• Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR). This certification is based on fundamental
knowledge and is considered an entry-level certification for those just beginning their HR
career.
• Professional in Human Resources (PHR). Minimum experience required. Candidates typically
work under an HR director.
• Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). The SPHR certification demonstrates
mastery in HR management. Candidates are typically HR leaders with a strategic planning role
and who have a broader view of HR functions.
• Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR). This certification is for HR professionals
who work in the global marketplace to prove their expert knowledge of multinational
responsibilities and policies.
In order to Help in your professional development, CSU is providing a series of self-grading questions in
each unit of this course to begin to prepare you for HR certification examinations. While these questions do
not encompass the full aspects of the certification examinations, they will give you an opportunity to test your
knowledge in many HR areas as you prepare for the exam and your career in Human Resource
Management.
