IN THE AUTHOR’S INSTITUTION, nursing students and nurses are
frequently informed during their undergraduate and postgraduate
education programmes that they are accountable for their actions
and omissions as part of their role. They are also informed that
they have a duty of care for their patients. However, Young (2009)
claimed there is much uncertainty regarding what duty of care
means for nurses in practice. For example, nurses may be unsure
if they owe a legal duty of care outside of their usual place of
work, or when they are off duty.
