Descriptive Statistics Part 2
The mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and coefficient gradient are terms used in descriptive statistics. The terms can be applied in analytical statistics to describe the data set in a variable. The mean or the measure of tendency is the average number of data points in a data set. The median is the center of the data set with the alternative measure of central tendency (Macfie & Nufrio, 2006). Another measure of tendency is the mode described as the most occurring value in a data set. Standard deviation is the most common measure of dispersion in statistics. It measures the overall variation of the data set around the mean. The coefficient of variation is the ratio the standard deviation is to the mean. It expresses the standard deviation as a percentage of the mean.
Some of the questions that can be asked include; Why standard deviation is considered the most important measure of dispersion? Which is the general formula of calculating median? Why are mean, mode and median considered common measures of tendency? How does the outliers affect median as much as they affect the mean? Name other two measures of tendency used in descriptive statistics. Which measure of tendency can be used mostly to show the population of middle value?
The measures of central tendency can be used in project research to determine the typical numerical values in a data set. Since the data points are distributed in a set of data from the highest value to the lowest value, a researcher can identify the center value in the distribution. The average value of the set of data can also be identified using the measure of tendency knowledge. Researchers use measures of a tendency to identify the most typical value in a data set. The most common measure of tendency includes mean, median, and mode, which standard deviation and coefficient of variation are associated with measures of central tendency.
