Week 5, Discussion
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems. It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis (CDC, 2021). Symptoms of COPD may include frequent coughing or wheezing, excess phlegm, mucus or sputum production, shortness of breath, or trouble taking a deep breath. COPD can be seen mostly in people with a history of asthma, current or former smokers, women, and people 65 years of age or older. Although there is no cure for COPD it can be treated through the cessation of smoking, avoiding air pollutants, use of medications, and the use of supplemental oxygen.
Evidence-based practice and epidemiology are used to improve prevention and health promotion in COPD by creating a COPD National Action Plan. In 2013 the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) submitted a proposal to Congress outlining its initial goals to help combat COPD. From 2014-to 2016 the NHLBI continued to meet with partners, patients and families, providers, academics, and industry representatives to collect data. The National Action Plan went live in 2017 providing workshops to educate the public and health industries in an effort to empower patients and improve care, surveillance, research, and application. Since the birth of NHLBI research in 2013 and the launch of The National Action Plan in 2017 COPD instances have decreased. Data from 2019 showed that death rates compared to those from 1999 decreased in US men (57.0 per 100,000 in 1999 and 40.5 per 100,000 in 2019) and among US women (35.3 per 100,000 in 1999 and 34.3 per 100,000 in 2019) (CDC, 2021). The National Action plan plans to continue its research by collecting data and statistics such as death rates, the prevalence of COPD by age and census, and prevalence by state and county.
